Title: 53mm pickup crisis
Post by: sheepbane on March 22, 2011, 10:27:10 PM
So I just ordered a C-pig bridge and i ordered it to the 53mm because i read that it works with tremelo bridges.
I didnt even think about weather or not it will fit. I have a jackson RR3, Will it fit? or did I just waste my money.

Yes, it'll fit!  The 53mm spaced pickups are the same size as the 50mm ones, it's only the polepiece spacing which is different.  The 53mm spacing will match your Floyd.

Did you order short or long legs?

Long on both the c-pig and the PK bridge.
I dont really know much about pickups this is my first upgrade project.

I asked about the legs because the RR3 has a fairly thin body, doesn't it?  But I don't think it'll be a problem, Gibson manage to fit long-legged pickups in SGs so you should be fine.

ok, I hear tim is a very reasonable guy, Do you think if when I get them and take em to the shop to get installed if it doesnt work out do you think he would be fine with me sending them back to replace em?
Or did I jump into this to quick without doing the right research

Yeah, under the terms of the BKP Warranty if there's a problem they'll exchange the pickups for you, so long as you return them in original condition.

Wonderful! I been saving for a few months now trying to scr@pe up enough to get new pups and I decided that I would take a risk on the BKP's because everyone on UG says there some of the best on the market.

Good question to raise and not an unfamiliar one
I get asked a lot whether a certain pickup will fit a certain guitar and whilst my product knowledge of different guitar brands is pretty good , I admit that I don't have all the answers

BUT help is easy to find in the shape of a ruler.
Take the ruler and measure the string spacing (middle of high E tro middle of low E) and often the answer is right there, or easy to interpret what will work best.

The long or short leg thing is a more tricky one for sure although a ruler can be used for this too - taking a measurement inside the pickup cavity  to see how deep it is.

try to be reasonable though - if you have ordered a fairly standard pickup and want it exchanging for a slightly different spec standard pickup then fair enough  (I think a C-pig would be classed as fairly standard now as long as you have not gone for mutlicoloured bobbins or something harder to resell)

If you order something fully custom and did not bother to check some details before ordering then why should it be changed for free  (and i am not for one second saying they wont!)

the pole spacing will work fine with what you have - i expect the legs will be too long or very close to it ... so wait and see, you may get lucky.

Is there any guitar the short legs wouldn't work in?

Even if you are replacing a pickup with long legs, I can't think of any reason why the short legs wouldn't go in its place - just the end of the 'leg' would be a bit further up the adjustment screw so you might have to use a shorter spring.

I guess it's a different matter if the pickups are mounted direct to the guitar body rather than a mounting ring or pickguard though..?

On a V or SG with scratchplate-mounted pickups, the bridge pickup sits pretty high above the scratchplate due to the angle of the neck, so in that situation, long legs are probably better than short.  But yes, as you said, you can get round the problem with shorter springs.

With direct-mounted pickups I assume most manufacturers use short legs, so there's enough wood under the pickups for them to be screwed to.

Ok I got ahold of the guys at BKP and they pulled my order and changed the spec's for me.
They said not worry they would of caught that mistake (on the poles) and shipped the right ones without my email since they are probably used to sending out for guitars the same or similar to mine.

Another question I looked around but I couldn't find any info on who they use for international shipping so I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this and when to think I could be expecting to get these bad boys? I just wanna play on them right now lol!

International postage can really vary.

Ive had some stuff take 3-4 weeks

yet others have been here in 3-4 days.

it all depends on customs & how fast the mail system is working on those particular days
