I quite liked that, then I scrolled the image over to the headstock. Oh dear...

Absolute utter junk, like all new Gibson designs. Pathetic. I honestly want them to go bust now, it's time someone bought them out, sacked their designers and got them back to making guitars that people actually want to buy. This is just abysmal.

I don't dislike it and I've seen way uglier Dean guitars.

Wasn't that a GOTW a while ago?  Or something very similar.

OK.... I like the korina, I like the gold.... I see what they were trying to do with the Les-Paul-meets-Moderne thing.... but the control layout is just cretinous.

Awful. I'm assuming it will be available for many thousands of pounds. The worst control layout I have see in a long while, it's almost like they were placed at random by a child.

I'm not even going to check the Gibson website. I know this monstrosity will have a 9/10 rating and a shedload of enthusiastic comments courtesy of Gibson's marketing men. Then I'll get angry and want to stab someone.

Yikes, didn't even notice that. Is lambda of some special significance to this model?

Do they like the idea of losing money? They do a few good things then just seem to lose it completely!

It's got a S1 vibe about it.  I'm with Huw, I've seen a lot worse and Gibson have a long history of doing odd things to their classic designs....

It does look a bit like somebody has been having a laugh on a guitar configurator though.  If it had a normal toggle, 2 pickups and the controls the normal layout perhaps with a V headstock like the S1 it might have had more appeal.

+1
I've seen people using merauders and RD's. I Love the look of the RD, although my mate who owns one has bypassed all the moog stuff and put in at least one coil tap. I don't mind the look of the Sonex.

These might be the freakiest designs pre-1985 or something. In recently years there have been some horrors. For a start, the gibson hendrix strat doesn't get a mention.

I once emailed gibson about all this and they claim they've always had a background as an innovator and that not all their designs were classic from the outset. That basically, taking the good designs and making them well, having good QC and focusing on making a great product for everyone isn't what they are about. As far as they are concerned, what they are making are future classics and perhaps not to be appreciated now. If you talk about them making a consistently good quality product for the majority of players, they don't care, they say if you're on a budget get an epiphone. They sponsor Polo events in dubai don't they? Obviously where your everyday muso hangs out.

But the Dean works - I like the Cadillacs.  They look really great in black.  Oh, and the controls are in the usual place too.

The Gibson would have looked OK if they had made it the Switchmaster layout (which would have moved the tone away from where it is now).  I think that is what they were doing (3 volume knobs in a row with a singe tone and a 5 way switch).  However, putting a Futura headstock on it is criminal.

i think it's odd looking, but not a disaster.  if i saw it in a shop i'd certainly want to give it a go!  i think the three volumes in a row is a good idea, but i agree they should have moved the tone a bit further away.  the five way switch is definately a good idea though, i never liked the switching on three pickup gibsons.

it's a beautiful looking guitar with an odd headstock, something which hasn't put a lot of you off Tylers :)

 aw you beat me to it... I was gonna say "would you prefer it if they'd copied the Tyler headstock?"

On the controls, the knobs are almost "strat" with the extra one behind/above. A strat player would feel at home probably (except all his mates would be sniggering at him). But the switch, yes it needs a five-way, but why there??!! Mebbe it works there, but it looks VILE!! Why not go the whole hog and stick it down where the strat would have it, and at the right angle?

Headstock - yuk, give me a Tyler any day (and I don't like those either!).

I wouldn't be in the market anyway, but visually the headstock and switch position would rule it out immediately for me. The rest could be ok if it was nice instrument for a reasonable price....

why not make a bigger route and use the toggle style super switch? and keep the dials in the same place.
although it would still look like the dean Cadillac.

I think my Tyler got a near-universal thumbs down....  :(

The headstock is probably the least of my objections on this Gibson.  If it had one volume, one tone and a five-way switch (in a roughly Strat-like location, as Andy said) I'd like it a lot.

The Dean headstock is already on the critical side, that Gibson is just hideous.

I wonder where all these ugly guitars they have been making end up... I can't imagine anybody buying any of these.
