Title: What kind of wiring is this in my gibson sg?
Post by: Shag101 on March 28, 2011, 06:03:40 PM
Hey All,

I had my warpig bridge and mississippi queen neck installed by a guitar tech when i got them.  I've been reading about 50's vs modern wiring and figured I give the 50's wiring a shot.  When I opened up the cavity, the wiring does not look like any wiring i can find. i know the bridge tone pot is a push/pull that splits the warpig.

looking at 50's vs modern, i think the only change is to connect the cap from ("modern" bottom(vol) - middle(tone)) to ("50's" middle(vol) - bottom(tone))

both of my tone and volume pots go from bottom(vol) to bottom(tone) with a cap in between.

thanks in advance

The wiring of the tone pot itself is irrelevant, it's all about where the cap is connected on the volume.

You have the pickup going into the volume pot (red) with the tone cap connected at the same point i.e. in parallel.  You have "modern" wiring.

If you were to move the cap wire from that tag to the middle one, i.e. so the cap is in parallel with the output from the volume pot, you would then have "vintage" wiring.

Hope that helps!

ic, just to make sure i understand....if i move each cap to the middle tab on the volume pots (tab that currently contains the brown switch wire) I would have vintage wiring?

thanks again

Wired my neck MQ from modern to vintage and what a difference.  Like many others have stated, you keep the high end when you roll down the volume but "most" said the wiring has no effect when all the knobs are at 10.  Well in my SG is does!  The guitar now has the high end sparkle it lacked before.  I wired the neck cap on an alligator clip and went back and forth several times noodling with notes and chords.  I must say for me...vintage is the way to go!!!

Cant wait to get the bridge MQ I ordered to replace the warpig.

As expected, I did notice that the volume is effected somewhat when adjusting the tone knob with vintage.  I leave my tone at 10 most of the time so no biggie.

Consider changing the little caramic disc caps with something better - maybe an orange drop or the new BKP/Jensen oil and paper ones
That will improve things again
