Title: Nailbombs- Covers, yea or nea?
Post by: K-40 on January 08, 2006, 12:09:32 AM
Ok, so I've decided on a set of nalbombs and a trilogy suite for the mid position. Now I have a question regarding covered v. open humbuckers and the sound differences they may have. All of my guitars over the years have had open coils so I haven't much experierience with covers on HBs.

So,

Are the sound differences between covered/open negligible? Loss in definition/clarity (high freq)? If I am correct,  the high freq loss is compensated for in the pups winding (?)  So with that said may I deem this primarily a cosmetic issue? Anyone a/b on the same guitar before? I would normally choose tone over aesthetics, but those camo covers look sweet :)
Cheers!

the difference should be completely cosmetic since the wind is adjusted to compensate the lost high freq

My vote is for the covers. They just look too damn good to pass up.

Covers do round out the highs a touch and also warm the bass...........it is a slight then but you can hear it.I do adjust the wind everso slightly to try and compensate but open coiled pickups always have a touch more presence to them.Having said that, covered pickups sounds great in HSH applications, especially NBs-the clips I recorded in the players room where on an RG with covered NBs so have a listen to that.
