Title: Mule height?
Post by: The Gecko on April 02, 2011, 04:00:39 PM
Hi guys.

I currently have some BKP Mules in my Tokai LS98F and I'm wondering what the ideal height is for these, or at least, what a good starting point is for these pickups. I'm currently at around 2mm both sides of the bridge pickup with the neck a little higher, with the last string depressed. Curious as to what people consider ideal around here.

thanks.

Well, the ideal height is when it sounds good to you ;)

The base rule is: set the bridge as high as possible, then lower it until there's no more false harmonics, then adjust the neck to match perceived output, then adjust the low or hi side to taste.

Now I never really followed this rule  - I don't really like the kind of tone you get with pups too close to the strings, I prefer to have them farther away so I get more of the wood's tone and more "air", so I basically start with pups quite down and higher them  until I get the "right" balance between tone and bite. I also tend to have the bridge a bit closer than the neck, but that's probably because I usually use the bridge for more aggressive, overdriven tones and the neck for cleaner, smoother stuff.

Oh, and beware, BKPs can be quite sensitive to height adjustements, and a quarter turn of the screw can already make some difference.

Gecko - you've currently got them around my starting place, and where I set most of my pickups  :)

Doesn't a Mule sit slightly than a horse?

Ok after a bit of fooling around, I ended up settling on around 1.6mm on the bridge pickup and 2mm on the neck. I've been checking for wolftones/false harmonics but since I don't exactly now what I'm listening for, I don't think I'm hearing them! I imagine with pickups of this output, they'd need to be a fair bit closer to get that kinda negative wolftone business, right?

Still trying to find the sweet spot here really. Any clues?
