My band went into SIR Studios in NYC yesterday for album preproduction and I had the chance to play the dual 2W amp setup at gig volume; it worked a treat! No problems being heard by anyone and the stage-volume balance was spot on. Even after I exported the tracks, the amps are within .5dB of each other. I didn't monitor anything through headphones, I just set it up to what sounded balanced on stage. There was no monitoring done during recording; we just played live, as normal.
Aside from a couple of vocal rides, this is 100% live in-room: We set up on stage, mic'd up the gear, and then set up the vocal mic off the stage.

i love the tone! you can hear the strings definitely. from what i hear you're definitely after a certain tone! i would certainly use more gain than you however. must be damn fun to bang on that guitar :D with your amp setup you must be the quietest and most efficient rock guitar player.
what are the amps? LNT and jet city?
-
The amps held up against the kit and a 60w valve bass amp (an old Traynor). I was there and can tell you that the room sound was really well balanced. Everything was recorded live and the room mic picked up a really balanced sound. There was no EQ or compression on any of the mics. They went into a Soundcraft Spirit RacPac mixer and then direct out into the Yamaha. The room was 40' x 24' with about a 16' ceiling and was well damped and the recorded sound was spot on for the room sound.

The amps are a little night train and an east amplification studio 2.
Finally got to listen to this at a decent volume.
And i must say i really enjoyed the tones everything slots together really nicely which surprised me for a live recording.
You definitely know what you were going for and achieved it full on i say!
-
Definitely like these tones. Great rocksound.
-
Like it. And I really like that guitar tone - just my idea of a rock guitar.
Pretty good playing as well!
Nice one :D

Yep really like that ........nice one bro

As Tony said, the bulk of my tone is from the East Studio 2. I use a LNT to fill in the volume on the other side of the stage. Speakers are Eminence Wizards, which are essential for low wattage amps.

It's a '67 Traynor Bass Master.

Phil was a TREMENDOUS help that day!

The drum overheads were direct into the Yamaha HDD. The vocal mic went into an SSL channel strip. All other mics when through the Soundcraft.

The tone is great....sound is perfect.
VERY NICE GUYS

Thank you, sir.
Phil can tell you -- when I first met him, I had 3 pet peeves re: guitar playing
#1 was I HATED power valve distortion. I now crave it and it's a very big part of my tone.
#2 was very low wattage amps. Since then I've gone from a 100W head to a 30W head to a 2W head!
#3 was P90s. I still sound cr@p when I use them, however. :)

Please do not give up on the P-90's.....they take awhile to find your tone and yo can find that by messing with different style n size capacitors. The key I found is in manipulation of the string when using P-90;s what you do is what you'll hear.
I've been trying to convert Ben for years, I have lots of P-90 guitars, from a 54 Goldtop all the way through some custom builds with MQ's. My favourite sound is a Junior into a Fender turned up, my last real stage rig was a blonde Termolux into a Blond 2x12 Bassman cab with a 61 SG Les Paul Junior and a Strat. The junior just roared through that setup, but back the volume down and you can get an almost acoustic sound.
I'm also with you on low power Fender amps, I've an original blackface Princeton Reverb & Deluxe, a Princeton II and a hot rodded silverface Princeton Reverb. When you can turn them up they sound great. I used to use an old Tom Scholtz Powersoak on the Princeton in my apartment to record, and the sound was great.
-
That's why I like my Blues Junior. Great for small gigs/rehearseling. In my band my Orange Rockerverb 50 head/ 2x12 cab is most of the time too much.
-
Great tone and playing Ben- that applies to each band member too.

Only just got round to listening to this. Great stuff! :D

I also have lots of P-90 guitars, but more because I like the guitars (LP Juniors and Specials) than because of the pickups. I sound cr@p with them too (but I do with most things).

Doesn't sound small at all, even if the amps are.
Will you work with several mics in different locations like Pagey did?
-
This recording has a lot of bleed between mics as-is. There is also a room mic capturing everything which I used in lieu of using any reverb plug in.
As to the way it's recorded when we do final tracking, I'll leave that up to the engineer.

This is my fave recorded tone of your East so far.
I can't believe how much of a tone 180 you've done in the last few years! If anything we've traded places! (Tonally speaking obviously, you're a much better player and writer than me )

I'm not so sure about that, honestly. I think I still sound like "me", but on a different foundation.
It's still pound cake, just a different recipe. :)
If you're going all the way back to my Rivera Knucklehead/ENGL/EL 34 100/100 days, then yeah -- the structure is a 180 -- I can't believe I used to lug that rig around as a matter of course week after week!! PDT_008

My favourite mic from the session:

I think he has removed all the old clips with his splawn and redone them all.
not 100% on that though.
i know i have some of the original demos done with the splawn and if its ok with Ben ill dig them out and upload them if he doesnt have them anymore

Playing/phrasing and writing wise yeah, but gear and tone wise it's almost totally opposite imo. Not saying it's a bad thing, just that it's different! 8)
Even after the Rivera and Engl etc you had the modded Marshall (2205/2210 if I recall?), and then the Splawn and then the Bumbox (which I think you still have? not heard it mentioned for a bit).
You also used to rip the mickey out of me for the pedal situation too!

Do yourself a favor and buy a few BONE ,IVORY or follisied wood pics you'll be surprised to hear the tone that comes from these new pics...
That's why the old pics looked like TORTISE SHELL is hard as a rock and gave out a great tone...
BONE does the same but I grabbed an IVORY one and it is to die for.
Ya barely have to touch the string
I promise you'lll ove it....there's a guy on ebay sells ya 10 bone pics for 10 bucks and ya get 5 other different others free. one is stone and sounds GREAT !!!!!
I'm in love with these BONE pics PLEASE TRY EM
James
Thanks again for putting up that link
