Post by: dano on April 08, 2011, 02:56:29 PM
I've gota cheapish Thinline copy (a Richwood, plays well and sounds not too bad) but teh pickups coudl do with upgrading I think, I quite like the sound of the Fender Widerange humbuckers but curious if BKP have something similar.

Any thoughts ?

Welcome here! Mules, and they are very versatile.

I'm pretty sure Tim can make you one from scratch as i definitely know of other companies that make a hum in any size you want even the emg 7/8 style casings etc

or he can rewind the ones you have or put one of his pickups in the covers you have

I was going to go on a rant about how those new WRHB dont sound like the old ones - but since you like the sound of the new ones it doesnt matter - they are just standard humbuckers in a wide range cover so going that way (with the mules suggested above) will sort you out

if you are after authentic wide range sounds then you can buy replica's from the creamery and jason lollar - which i dont believe use the correct magnets but are the most accurate replicas available other than an accurate replica with the right magnets for $450 per pickup from telenator

i sold an original last night and that went for £215 on ebay

Those 'Creamery' ones do look nice - he's using FeCrCo magnetised polepieces rather than the vintage-correct CuNiFe polepieces.  I've had two originals, and I wasn't crazy about the tone, so I wouldn't say deviating from the recipe is a bad thing.

In my own 72 Tele Custom RI I took the Wide Range neck pickup out and put a P90 there - much better.

The Wide-Range pickups in the re-issue guitars are nothing more than standard humbuckers underneath!
Mules would definitely be a good set to try.

EDIT: Just seen Wez had already established this!
