We all get tired of cranking out metal from time to time and just want something to chill to. My newest find is Grace Potter, loving her stuff - great for soul-tinged moments.
This one is more upbeat, but plenty of her stuff is really laid back, loving it...

Most of my "chill-out" stuff is shoegaze, ambient black metal, drone and the like. Jesu, My Bloody Valentine, Ulver, Wolves in the Throne Room, Alcest, Earth and so on.

moon safari - Air
Very none rock and roll but you can see they like Pink Floyd

I'm undecided about Earth - went to see them at Newcastle Uni a few years back.
Underneath your metal exterior I bet you're a soft, fluffy bunny kind of guy - chilling out to some Cat Stevens
-
I'm not much one for Cat Stevens but my listening does feature a lot of "softer" artists, I just wouldn't think of many of them as being "chilling out" music.
Last.fm says Steve Earle, Nick Cave, Zappa and Peter Gabriel are all in my top ten listens. But they're most "wandering about town" or "late night party wind-down" music
Earth have been hit and miss live when I've seen them, to the point I didn't bother when they played in Glasgow this week, but I think they're consistently great on record.

I'll chill out to Earth. Pentastar in particular.
I'll also bang on some Dinosaur JR, Pavement, Cat Power, some Dub, various Hip Hop, Joanna Newsom, Osker, Espers, Give, Pearl Jam, Supertouch.
I'm going to be playing guitar in Among The Bones. Pretty chilled.

This is done by a friend of mine, this is a split release but you can get the Among The Bone half using the link to listen on the bottom left. This is older stuff. I'll be working on the live version of an as yet unreleased LP.
would like to see what people think.

good call, Floyd are a classic sunny afternoon, beer in hand, lazing in the back garden type of band - Wish You Were Here, oh yeah! 8)

Boards of Canada for me :)

If I really want to chill out I'll listen to the "Nude" disk from You? Me? Us? by Richard Thompson. The Woods Of Darney is very, very special...
-
nice song (grace potter), hadn't heard of her but she reminds me of bonny rait.
-
Sigur Ros. I love the fidelity in their recordings and the music is excellent for chilling out, reading a book, soldering up some new toy....
-
Portishead, Massive Attack, Morcheeba.... it's all about the trip-hop!
-
this is my kind of chillout music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKw5mbcE7VY

Today I'm sat with all the windows open and beers in hand listening to a 10,000 song prog rock playlist, and chilling out, I guess, though prog wouldn't have occurred to me as chill out music, really.
Right now, it's Caravan.
EDIT: And I'm playing tonight and am going to be burst and flinging Zappa solos around.

The download link on the page goes to an 1.5 hour long track.

I usually go for classical music when I want to chill. I am getting a bit worried about myself as I recently downloaded some choral music. The complexities of the harmonies keeps me interested and distracts me from the cr*p that normally fills my head.

quite 38th, spem in alium by the tallis scholars is particularly good.

I also like the more ambient variety of dubstep:
16 Bit - Twice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMoWHcr3tus)
16 Bit - Shallow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJsdMSaArf4)

My thoughts exactly. Although I've been in a Nick Drake mood for the last few weeks, so I'd add that to the list as well.
