Title: Ibanez's wiring diagram for an SZ
Post by: Spitfire on April 10, 2011, 07:40:31 PM
I'd quite like the below wiring on my RGA... so i have 3 way, but in the middle i have the inner coils of the two humbuckers..

my guitar has 2 pots..(1 tone and 1 vol.. preferably) and a standard 3 way blade switch...

is there a way i can achieve this?? im really unsure about it.. do i need a special 3 way switch? baring in mind i cant fit a toggle switch like in the diagram.

thanks, David

You can do it with the 4 pole 5-way super switch, or if you want PRS style wiring, the megaswitch P.  BK sell the superswitch and allparts or Stewart MacDonald sell both switches.

I did the same wiring on my 7 String Dean Vendetta with a Liquifire and a Crunchlab, sounds great, but I had to give it to an experienced tech and even he was nearly driven mad. Itīs supposed to be the wiring Petrucci uses and it can be found on music man guitars, but try getting any information about that. Dimarzio germany didnīt know how to do it, music man germany had no idea,...turns out music man uses a curcuit board, no wiring. Finally we ordered a very specific switch from dimarzio (donīt know exactly which it was anymore, would have to look for the packeging, though the number on itīs side says 48096). Itīs not a big switch at all, should fit any guitar I guess.

Long strory short: Yes, it is possible. Yes, itīs complicated. Worth it? Hell yeah.

With my PUs it gives me the best of two worlds which is a great stratesque rock sound with that certain dirt and old schoolness in it. I love it.

That Ibanez wiring does indeed use a special 4-pole, 3-way switch.  Here's the DiMarzio wiring diagram for the same thing:

To get it hum-cancelling in the middle position, you'd need both screw coils facing the same way (Peter Green/Gary Moore  LP style) unless one of the pickups has a "flipped magnet" (PRS style).

For a blade switch, here's the Megaswitch P-Model which Phil mentioned, it's a 5-way which duplicates the wiring of a PRS rotary switch:
