Title: Amp for "grinding" Motorheadworshipping Crustcore.
Post by: Madsakre on April 11, 2011, 04:27:13 PM
Hey i've been on the lookout for a new amp for some time, and i've decided to get a new for my new band which is park c--krock/crustcore and the other is relentless grindcore/crust.

My gear is as follows;
Gibson flying v with a Ceramic Pig90.
Boss Hm-2 pedal
Boss Noise Supressor
"amp"

I was thinking of getting a Orange, 6505 or a marshall head.
I mainly think of getting a tiny terror or something, since im living on a budget.

Go out and buy a Marshall (anything from JCM800 to the modern JCM2000 stuff, ideally one channel though) and drive the balls out of it with that HM-2 pedal. I do/did this with JCM800 (with a Blackstar DIST-X) and it sounds killer!

As far as I'm aware the HM-2 pedal nails pretty much the Swedish Death Metal sound (Entombed, Sun Studios? etc). You're pretty much all the way there!

I would suggest a Marshal (or alike) too.

Since you are on a budget have a look for a DSL50 - they come up pretty cheaply on the 2nd hand market. You can mod it later as funds allow. I've always said thats what I'll do, should something happen to my old JMP50.

if you're on a budget, a DSL50 would do all of that.

(edit: thats what everyone else says too - take from that what you will).

I play crust and grind with a 6505+ and it does the job bang on (often with either a Fuzz Factory or a D*A*M Meathead in front). But nigh on any Marshall and an overdrive will do the job fine.

How about a jcm 900? They are dead cheap here.

Im running it through a v30 4x12 Rectifier cab

6505. 100% Brutal amp.

However, if you can find a Marshall 8100 Valvestate head, that's well worth it. Fairly budget too.

HM-2 into Marshall is pretty much old school death metal. Marshall valve heads turned all the way up is Motorhead.

At one point I used a Marshall Shredmaster into JCM900 which was kind of silly. Pity that Shredmasters are going for stupid money now, they're great dirty/thrash pedals. £150 on ebay?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  :?

I used to borrow a shred master back when i was in college :) Great thing through my bandit combo.

How do you think a tiny terror would be? I mean, its pretty easy to crank, and i gain more than enough gain from the hm-2

For sounds like used by Disfear, Nails, Black Breath and so on. Your HM 2 into pretty much anything with valves will do you smashing. The Tiny Terror would be fine.

The JCM 900 is quite good for the kind of tone and they handle pedals well.

You only need to purchase this pedal:

If you're thinking of a 900, get the JCM900 SL-X.
Its the best of the 900's and you can pick em up cheap since the 900 have such a poor rep.

Laney perhaps? They're known for being quite bright, but have more of a lower mid emphasis than the Marshall upper mids. Can probably get quite close to that ZEKE (never heard of em before but I'm gonna have to listen to them a bit more!) tone with the right guitar and pedals!

edit - just did a really quick clip without playing with any of the settings much (I typically don't really play this sort of thing!). It sounds a bit fizzy but maybe it has the grind you're looking for :) Didn't use BKPs for this, just the stock epiphone pickups in my Pearl LP custom.

agreed - they have an extra valve stage for extra gain rather than the diode clipping in the 'standard' JCM900 (from memory).

here's a clip of one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90WlrZpANqw

i would rather have a less gainy amp, because the hm-2 gives me all the drive i need. If i had the money, then i would definetly get something like an old superlead or something. they shout a bit more than the modern amps.

I'm a little confused at why you're asking about what amp to get, sounds like you already know what you need - a 1959/1987 model Marshall; since you're using the Boss HM-2 for all your dirt.

You can pick up JCM800-era 1959 and 1987 model Marshalls for much less than the 70s Marshalls and they're still great amps; really gnarly.

Is that top one practically a JCM800 in a vintage box?

my "home amp" is a blackstar HT-5, and it sounds killer with the HM2 used as an overdrive... pure sunlight tone! if you don't need extreme volumes (but i suspect you do... ;)) it could be an excellent and cheap alternative

i´d suggest you to get a laney aor 50/100.
they are really nice and grindy.
besides that any older marshall will do the trick with a hm-2
