Right, so I've pretty much figured out what I'd want in terms of speakers and headphones for reference/studio work. But my earphones have died (finally) and I was thinking of getting some new headphones and I'm having difficultly finding good ones.
I don't want semi- or open ones, I want closed back. I don't want to annoy people with my music.
They have to be circum aural but not too massive that I hit shop signs with them.
And dare I say they need to at least look nice..
Budget? Maybe £200.
This is all "What I want" but if you think "Better with this, trust me", then I'm willing to listen :B
I say £200 because I can just get some Ultimate Ears Triple Fi 10s (or Westones but I heard they were poo in terms of range)
I always thought headphones were better and there would be at least some people like me; enough that brands would have released a model or two.
I'm tempted to even buy studio ones and wear them on the go but it sounds like a daft idea.
Any ideas, guys? :)

I got some audiotechnica M50s for mixing at home. easily the nicest headphones I've used for anything, including general listening. They are studio phones so they have a looooong cord, but they sound absolutely superb to me!

I've been using Senn HD 25 II for ages and see no real reason to change.
Below budget and more than good enough for "on the go"
However, in a fit of drunken madness I picked up a pair of B&W P5's on ebay for £170. Not £250 worth (RRP) but I'm liking them for what I paid and for the amount of time I spend flying. Supra aural rather than circum aural
I agree with you though, there is a world of choice and a barrel load of snake oil out there for mobile head/earphones.

I have HD25s and ATHM50s - for general listening, the M50s.
For mixing they're the best all rounder I've found - HD25s are a bit more detailed in the mids and let you catch a bit more going on in the sound (duff notes, string noise, timing, inadquate phrasing/clarity/articulation, that sort of thing), but they lack the low end depth for studio work on their own. The M50s are a bit more forgiving in the mids, but its acceptable, and they sound nicer, fuller, deeper and more 3D to listen to.
I use the 25s to help dial in tones (they have better isolation than the M50s which helps a lot with that) and both of them, plus my pro750s get use in mixing. No one of the 2 can do the job alone. I dont like the 750s as much as the others for most metal though, oddly squishy high mids, bloated low mid that will lie to you like a cheap whore, confusing spatial representation thats niether binaural or stereo, but they sound lush as $%&# for pretty much anything mellower (rock, say, alter bridge and softer).
Never, ever, ever, ever mix on earbuds. Ever. You can get away with cans though, if you know them very well.
As far as on the go; I use some slightly-above-entry-level audio technica buds, I forget the model, now (but they're nearly as good as the IE8s I used before, that broke). I wont wear cans wandering around because I wont endanger them and do believe I'll look like a muppet (as a secondary consideration). However, I do have a certain respect for people that do: it seems to be its says "These sound good, those little pieces of shite that stick in your ear sound as small as they are, and I dont care how I look, the sound is worth it, bitches".

These are an option if you find that hearing what's coming out of you're headphones can get distracting.
The packaging is accurate at least, everything really does sound as though it's being whispered to you by a middle aged Asian woman.

I got some Seinheisser (sp?) in ear headphones a while back. They won the What Hifi award for in ear headphones under £50 (£30 RRP and you can get them for about £10).
Apparently they take a while to break in. Wish they'd hurry up because they still sound fairly shitee.

Just leave them on at reasonable volume under a pillow? should help break them in quicker.

Pink noise breaks headphones in very quickly. 12 hours, maybe a bit more.

Lots of those weird psycho-acoustic/mind changing/sleep assistance CDs/DVDs will have pink noise in addition to a whole rack of isolated frequencies useful in getting those drivers loosened up and the brand new harshness tamed. Load that up to play constantly on your computer for a few days while you are at work and it won't be an irritation.

I had been impatient to try a new pair one time while in a studio apartment. I used a rubber band to keep the cups against one another and then wrapped the whole thing in a pillow with a belt snugged over that. Wasn't too bad. I slept just fine.

Well they definately sound better. I put them on the laptop last night when I went to bed.
Think I may give them a blast of white noise tonight just for good measure.
