Title: Sinner - Short Recording Test (Hard Rock / Metal)

Forgive the sucky playing.  I just wanted to have a go at recording a metal tone, as I'm brand new to recording in general.  Not sure if I'd get a better tone if I really cranked the amp... or if my ears / cr@ppy Presonus Audiobox could even handle the signal.

That was nice and simple. It was a good recording (for my ears that is), I do think bass maybe was a bit too heavy. It sounded a bit boomy from under the guitar.

It's good still.

Here's a very different tone from the same pickup / guitar:

markedly muddy and bassy, was this played on the neck pickup?

Nope, it's the same bridge p/u.  I think that's due to a few things:

1. Absolute first attempt at using mixing and mastering programs.

2. The "amp" wasn't my actual mic'd 6505 (as heard in the other clip), but a direct Garageband "Indie Fuzz" amp model I tweaked a bit.

3.  The main culprit to that effect - I think - is a distinct sounding multiband EQ I mis-used in Izotope's mixing program, Alloy.  It's meant to combine two guitar takes into one, but makes for a very large sound even as one track.  However, as you said, very low-endy.

If you would, re-listen to the link and then compare it to the one I just tried:

The guitar is much brighter and the drums less "hissy."  But obviously the main issue is the guitar tone at it's core.  Garageband's amp models in regards to metal basically suck.  However, I think a different sort of industrial sound can be struck.  That's more or less what I was going for.  On the drums, I wanted a gated electro sound combined with a raw 80's garage metal room sound / snare tone.  Pretty wonky, I know.  :p

sorry mate but that sounds really harsh and out of sync. Needs work.

Yeah, everything is mixed too loud / dense.  I'm working in Garageband, so I'm forced to double and triple track every instrument if I want to add certain effects.

Soundcloud tends to stagger it's loading a bit as the track plays sometimes, which may contribute to a weirder sound in terms of being in sync.  However, the electronic noises are just automated to follow the bass drum.  The combination of tones aren't coming out sounding very tight.  (Plus I suck at drumming, as I just started earlier this year.)

Anyway, I appreciate the listen!  Only been at recording for a week or so, so obviously I'm still at square one in terms of just about everything.
