Title: AFD100- Volume Pedal or Boost
Post by: mkh02 on April 19, 2011, 11:28:07 AM
Hey guys

So after much deliberation over my Carvin Legacy II and POD HD500, I have pulled the trigger and bought a Marshall AFD100.

Will be arriving tomo cant wait lol...one question though.

Due to it only having one channel I will be chugging away on rhythm then when I kick the solo in I want an increase in volume.

What do you think would be better?

1- Volume pedal (Morley little alligator) and reverb in the effects loop at the end of the chain. Idea being is that I dont want to alter the gain/sound just want to increase the volume.

2- Some form of volume boost pedal infron or in effects loop. I have never really used them and I am curious about how they work and if they are any good.

The volume pedal seems fairly standard but I would be interest in some opinions.

I really just want the pure amp sound with some reverb. Might put a drive pedal infront at some point but not what I am really aiming for. I want to see if this amp can really shine on it own.

Thanks in advance guys!

EDIT: I just read your post back and I missunderstood... but rather than a boost, you just need a switchable volume box in the loop. really simple. Like a fixed 'volume' stomp box. Set up your amp for your lead tone, then stamp on the pedal to just drop the volume. It's like have switchable master volumes. If that makes sense. It would be easier than a volume pedal with a rocker unless you need the flexibility of the treadle.

A boost infront will change your tone a bit, you might like it. It might not necessarily boost volume depending on how your amp is set.
A boost in the loop... I dunno. If your preamp has a lot of gain you might risk overdriving the phase inverter which is my experience doesn't sound that great. but i might be wrong about that.
To keep the amp sound, I think the way to go is what I mentioned above, unless someone knows better.

EQ in the loop works well for a lead boost. You can boost the mids as well so it'll come out of the mix a bit better than just "being louder" :)

You don't need anything other than the standard footswitch  :)

The FX loop has a volume control, so all you need to do is set that louder for your solo volume and stop the FX loop on - simple!

wow that is simple thanks mate!

The only thing is that I will want to put reverb in as well which has to go after distortion.....I genuinely think a dry amp sound is awful lol!

The reverb gives so much colour and sustain to the notes.

In which case you can't do what I propose then, unless you only want reverb on your solo bost.  Which works really well actually!

In addition to this, you could have an EQ in the loop set for a fatter 'mid-heavy' tone, then when you turn the loop off you go back to your rhythm tone.

twinfan is right. but if you want the loop on all the time its look like a clean boost, eq, or really basic volume cut pedal are the things to look at

That might work quite well...

Crisp for the rhythm work and then reverb for the solos to get the longer singing notes...thanks mate.

Will give it a go although I am leaning towards a volume pedal, the little alligator lets min volume to be set....

Lots of options... can anyone recommend a good boost pedal for my needs?

Have a look at the Devi Ever Punch Love - cheap, and actually quite versitile.
