Title: Test a pot?

Is there a way to test a pot to see if it's actually 500k?

Yep  :)

Get a multimeter and point the testers on the two outside lugs.  (I think!)

You'll need to make sure it doesn't have any pickups connected to its tags when you do take the reading as they can alter the value
