Hey,
Looking for a new Pickups for my Blade Texas Standard Pro.
the music i like to hear\play is:
Pink Floyd, U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Foo fighters, Blackfield, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Radiohead, RHCP etc...
I love to play clean stuff on my neck\neck middle postion so those pickups must be clean and low output with rich sound.
and the bridge I'd like a pickup that will be less thin than a normal strat pickup.
I thought about a few sets. "Apaches" altough I think they would be too thin for me, the "63' Veneer", the "59' Slab Board" and the "Mother's milks". any suggestions? base plate on the bridge for more thickness\warmness? an "Irish Tour"\"Slow Hand" in the bridge?
Thanks alot,
Nadav

Welcome to the forum. I wouldn't describe the Apaches as thin. They are fantastic traditional Strat pickups and have a wonderful warm rounded tone. I haven't tried the '63 or '59 pickups though so cannot comment upon them. The Mother's Milks are, speaking from memory, a little more full in the bottom but it was a while ago since I played them whereas the Apaches I play all the time and so I would prefer that others with more frequent/recent knowledge correct me if I am wrong.
Another option for you to consider would be Slowhands ( I just happen to have a set :) ) which are nice and clean but with a nice warmth to them too- a little hotter and more mids than the Apaches but not very nice indeed. I have had both sets now for some time and wouldn't change them. That in itself may or may not be an endorsement that means much but I just mean that like many guitarists who are forever chopping & changing stuff, I often do too but in this case have no inclination to.

I would pair a Apache-bridge with two Mother's Milk. BKP-producer Tim has this set in one of his strats. The Apache is not thin at all.

I have several variants on Apaches, Mother's Milks, the 59 Slab Board, Irish Tours, Slowhands, Sultans and Trilogy Suites, as well as a few original sets of Fender pickups. I would look at a Slowhand bridge with either 2 Mother's Milks or the Apache's with a baseplate on the bridge pickup.

the baseplate make the single sound more beefy than a regular bridge pickup?

I don't know how thin he is but, alot of strats are to thin for me in the bridge position. so I'm looking for a bridge pickup that won't too thin and grating but still have the strat character.

I don't think I'll like the Slowhands. some people told me that a single with alot mids will sound very similar to a P90. and last time I've checked, I didn't like the drive sound of those.
Thanks all for the commets! I'll think I'll mail Tim and in sunday or so will go and check the those pickups on the local store :)

I don't think I'm following. You prefer the driven sound of single coils to that of a P90? I don't think a slow hand will sound like a P90 tho.
How about a sinner SC on the bridge? But I doubt it will balance well with the others. Or maybe an Irish Tour with base-plate.

I tried a Reverend guitar with 2 P90s and my teacher's LP Studio with P90's, and I found them was too rich in frequencies in the overdrive section. but I liked the Reverend's Clean sound.
I think the Sinner won't be a match for me because it's output. I'm noy seeking for an high output pickup, just a beefed up single coil :P

If you want a beefed up single coil without much mids and that isn't high output, I think the only option is the Irish Tour, or as has been said an Apache with base plate. Coupled with Mother's Milk on neck and middle.

Ask the BKP guys about the "Crazy Diamonds" set - they pair up the middle and neck from the '59 Slab Boards with a bridge unit overwound to around 13kΩ. I have that set in my strat, and it's probably the most versatile SSS set you could imagine. That bridge pickup packs some serious beef under gain, yet doesn't overpower the other positions, and still retains a great stratty character when played clean.

Isn't the output a bit too high? I mean the middle\neck are 5.6K and the Bridge is 13k? it's like a double power! it's not gets noisy?
if not, that's sound perfect. do you have an sound samples of your guitar?
BTW what's the diffrence between the 59' and the 63'?
-
It's surprising, but no there is no issues with the apparent large disparity in DC resistance. It is just a fatter and punchier sounding bridge position.
As for the difference between the '59s and the '63s, I'd describe the '63s as a little fuller sounding and not quite as woody. However, listen to the clips on the site and decide for yourself :)

I have them too, though when I got them they were called the 69 custom set (and my 59 slab boards were 62 customs!). I was going to recommend them too, but wasn't sure if they were still doing them. The sustain from the bridge pickup is great and it blends really well with the neck & middle.

Are they on the website or by special request? Didn't see this set.

They aren't on the site, as far as I can tell. They sound like an unofficial set, kind of like the Pig90 was until they officially added it to the lineup.

DC rating is not equivalent to output.

I Emailed them about the "Crazy Diamonds" set and Ben Answered me that:
"The only pickups we do are in the shop."
in the website's demos I mostly liked the MM neck and middle, but the bridge was just a bit to sharp for my taste :\
so still thinking about MM bridge with baseplate, ITs in the bridge or Apache in the bridge with baseplate.
-
The Apache will sound fatter. Thick mid-50's tones. A Slowhand-bridge is on option too.
-
Strange that Ben should outright deny that one, since there are several off-the-menu sets that they do make for customers on a fairly regular basis.
Anyway, the Slowhand bridge would be a cool match there, though the Apache is a bit of a secret weapon - despite its lower output it has a fat midrange and smooth top end due to the AIII magnet. Tim himself pairs the Apache bridge with Mother's Milks in the middle and neck in his main strat.

+1. The Apache-bridge is underrated. It's sound wicked.
