Title: Pickup suggestion for LP Custom, Drop A
Post by: gfight on April 26, 2011, 04:18:43 PM
Hi-

I wanted to get some opinions on the best pickup choice for a Gibson Les Paul Custom tuned to drop-A.  I'm currently using a Splawn Nitro through a Mills Acoustics 4x12 w/ V30s.  Style-wise my band is somewhere in the ballpark of Nothingface, 36 Crazyfists, etc... This will be replacing EMG 81/85s and I am looking for something a little less sterile and more organic/dynamic.  Since I'm tuned so low I'd need something that is decently tight with low tunings as well.  Based on sound clips and a little research, I'm considering either a Miracle Man or Painkiller set.   Do these sound like good choices for what I'm going for?

Thanks!

Miracle Man will be in that EMG ball park without having too sharp of an attack. They will be much less sterile and more organic. Dynamics definitely come through easily, although they do not split well and I wouldn't say they are versatile at all... Oddly, they sound better clean in the guitar that I have them in than the Suhn Aldrich pick-ups which I replaced sounded clean.

I never understood why people tune guitars with such short scales to such low tunings, it's just beyond me. But yes, the Miracle Man works well, as would a Black Dog for a much clearer and cleaner signal.

Miracle Men and the cleaner/more polished Cold Sweats will work.

Thanks everyone for the replies so far.

Alex - yes, I agree a LP is definitely not the best guitar choice for tuning so low, but I just have always liked LP's and I use pretty heavy strings to try and accommodate for the lack of string tension.

I would swap the spakers to the Governor/Manowars in x-pattern before I would get pick-ups personally. V30's and Splawns do NOT get along. Been there, done that...

BACKED. v30s can get quite ice-picky with marshall voiced amps.
