Like the title says, I'm after a fat, dark, smooth sounding neck pickup for a bright Les Paul Custom. I'm running an Emerald bridge which sounds amazing, but the Gibbo Classic 57 in the neck isn't really cutting it any more! The only BK neck pickup I've previously tried was the Nailbomb but it was a bit modern sounding and cutting for my needs. Thanks in advance!

warpig?

I would have thought that a good match for the Emerald would be a VHII or Holydiver, I know they are not dark, however they both sound fat and smooth in LPs.

Maybe a Mule or a Black dog-neck.

Have you considered the Emerald neck? With a fairly hot wind and an Alnico IV magnet the sound is certainly smooth and fat, though it also retains excellent clarity and definition. It also, of course, is very well-matched to the Emerald bridge you are using at the moment.

I should have said, I don't play metal, hence the Warpig may be a bit much!
Basically I'm after something PAF-hotPAFish, so the BD and Mule are ones that I'll check out; the Emerald neck I think will be too bright. I don't want any sizzle, just something smooth and Gary Moore-like.
What do you think of the Stormy Monday? I've heard it's dark and smooth.

The Stormy Monday is smooth and sweet sounding, but I wouldn't call it dark. It's not a fat, thick sound. Gary Moore used the PG Blues on occasion, but for us mere mortals something slightly hotter probably helps.
I think you should definitely look at the AIV PAF-ish neck pickups like the Mule, Crawler, maybe Abraxas. I haven't tried the Black Dog neck, I've heard it's pretty fat but maybe with the AV magnet it's a bit tougher/more aggressive sounding?
Don't rule out the Emerald neck, our man Nolly knows his stuff! :)
