Title: Suggestions for a bandmate?
Post by: ratspeak on May 03, 2011, 12:01:37 AM
Hey guys, long time no see! I've been away for a while, but I'm back to ask the eternal question - what pickup would you put in my ____ guitar to play ____ and ____? This time, however, I'm helping my bandmate out. He's very taken with my Ceramic Warpig > ESP Horizon and has decided to buy BKPs. I'm helping him decide, but it's kinda tough because he's using my Pigs as his only reference point and he's not as acquainted with them as I am. My normal rig sees my signal passing through a TS9 set up to compress some of the low-end and I take a lot of bass out at the amp's EQ. Matt says he wants a pickup that's going to be bassier than the Warpig, but he's hearing it through all these bass-sucking variable factors so I doubt that's the case. I do however, think that he's going to want something that has punchy, powerful lows, so I'm not sure what to recommend based on that. I'm a little rusty.

He's putting them into an LTD MH-400NT, which has a full mahogany body with a set maple neck and rosewood fretboard (unlike the neckthru ESP Standard version), so I know right there it's going to be warmer/bassier. We play all kinds of metal, both of us share lead duties and harmonize a bit. He has no preference to alnico or ceramic, but says he wants the pickup to be close in heat to my Pigs. I reccomended the PK and MM for him, but I'd like to hear what you guys think. I'm also going to email BKP and find out what Tim thinks.

EDIT: We play in Drop-C.

I can't imagine which BKP he'd get with more bass than a Warpig or even close to it on power. It sounds to me like he wants a Warpig.

Well, I think he's going more for punch than the "big" bassy sound of the Pig. I think the fact that my guitar is so bright and middy gives him the impression that it doesn't have the low-end punch that he wants. I get the sense he could get that from a different pickup under the conditions of his guitar and rig.

I'd concur with Tim's recommendation of a Miracle Man

I haven't actually emailed Tim; the MM was my "off-the-top-of-my-head" recommendation to my bandmate. Your word holds a lot of pull in my personal opinion though, Nolly, with the ceramic-AM-neck tip and the C-Pig rec this time last year. I'll bring this to Matt and see what he thinks.

MM or a Painkiller.
