Title: Phil X news.....
Post by: Philly Q on May 03, 2011, 11:13:36 AM
My near-namesake, YouTube guitar celeb and all-around super chap Phil X has only gone and temporarily joined Bon Jovi!

I'm just a bit worried - with his natural shy, retiring personality he might have trouble coping with suddenly being in the public eye....

I'm gutted I haven't got tickets to see them now - I'd love to see Phil X live!  Bet he's having to bite his tongue a bit though as the "hired hand"...

there is a fair chance he'll have been told to hold back a bit on his manic personality - no upstaging

I expect so! Look at Hugh McDonald - he's been in the band nearly 20 years and they don't even include him in photos!

I know they said they'd never "officially" replace Alec John Such (what a load of bullshitee) and it may not bother McDonald, he seems a very low-key sort of chap, but I think it's insulting.

It's pretty commonplace, and pretty bad form I reckon. Biffy Clyro and Korn both have (or at least had) guitarists in the live band who weren't even allowed on the stage.

I know a few bands which are just a couple core members who take guys out to play with them live and make a point of telling folk who their other bands are and trying to get them a bit notice, which is what folks should do.

That reminds me of a Michael Schenker story from many years ago - he had a roadie called Steve Casey who used to play some of the rhythm guitar parts, offstage (one of the music papers I bought at the time had a picture of him standing behind the amps with a black Les Paul, if I remember right!).

When Graham Bonnet was in the band, he got very drunk one fateful night and pulled Casey on stage, saying "this is the guy who really plays the solos" or words to that effect.  That was Bonnet's last MSG gig.

Given the state Schenker was in the last time I saw him, perhaps they should bring Steve Casey back....

Very bad to not have the 'support' guys not given the recognition they deserve (unless they don't want it). They probably make the band sound much better!

I found a clip of Phil X with Bon Jovi playing Livin on a Prayer. Sounded good, the only problem was that the dildo who filmed it had his/her camera fixed on JBJ for most of the time, including the solo.

Oh I remember that
Previously Paul Raymond had been the keyboard and 2nd guitars in the band , but after he quit Steve Casey was brought in.

Also I think it was his only gig

I think I also saw the pitiful performance  he put on when supporting the Scorpions - wasn't good
He has been right back on form lately

Not very 'rock and roll' but when Wet, Wet, Wet were getting started in the early 1980s they offered Graeme Duffin the chance to be an official band member and he declined - has played with them ever since but never credited with any of the songwriting etc...
