Which, unlike the online-poll of the last 20 Greatest Metal Albums list, is full of brilliant albums.
-
Meshuggah, fantastic.
-
Good list that :D
"Heavier than: Dr Manhattan’s massive blue c--k in a giant lead condom."
-
Wow, I own three of those albums. Cred or what?

"While Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman aren’t as technically gifted at soloing as, say, Metallica’s Dave Mustaine,"
wut
and yeah i've heard of about two of those bands
-
well if it was 1982....
-
still doesn't explain why he thinks mustaine is gifted at soloing...
I mean as the consistently second-best soloist in megadeth...

Well you've 17 to give a shot then!

Why aren't the Wonderstuff in this list, what is the NME coming too these days??

or Ned's Atomic Dustbin - who could forget their classic 'Kill Your Television'
-
Well, at least they chose the right Meshuggah album & they got Godflesh in there. Otherwise, it's nonsense (IMH-and admittedly subjective-O :))
FWIW, I own 4 of the albums on that list...

To be fair to Mustaine himself (not that it's him making this claim!), except during his most egomaniacal phases, he's bigged up his rhythm playing but he's been quite modest about his soloing skills. And (again, most of the time) he's been full of praise for his lead guitarists.
Sorry, off topic.
I really should own Dopethrone.

I'm actually quite fond of his lead playing in most cases its not overly complex or utter w**kery and always fits the songs perfectly.
I preferred all of Dave's solos on endgame and didnt like a single one of chris'.
I just listened to Sun)))
what the hell is that ????
-
^ haven't really listened to endgame  I mainly mean friedman when I talk about megadeth, lol.

Oh yeah, sure. My complaint's not with mustaine (who's admittedly a pretty good rhythm guitarist, and as you say, normally gives due credit to the lead players), it's with the press.
"Oh he's the main guy who sings? And he plays guitar too? He must be the lead guitarist! Who's that eejit over there with the curly hair? He can't be doing anything important..."

Actually, I agree with you there. I find Mustaine's solos a bit repetitive but at least they're appropriate to the songs.
I'm a fan of Poland and especially Friedman. I have no strong feelings either way about Young or Pitrelli. But I haven't liked the playing of the last two lead guitarists (Drover and Broderick) at all - and it's spoiled my enjoyment of the last couple of albums.

yeah friedman is just (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/images/smilies/bowdown.gif)

I preferred Drover to broderick for the original solos, but Broderick is great at playing all the old school ones.
I do however love Drovers work with Eidolon & King Diamond it's a lot more creative than what he did in megadeth.

Any list with Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard is OK by me.
One track I never see on these kinds of lists is Ministry's "N.W.O." the first track on the ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ album. To my ears the intro is amongst the heaviest things ever recorded; a full on aural assault. I love it.
-
It's quite a fun list. Interesting to see that he went for doom/stoner/sludge "heavy" as a general rule.
If anyone hasn't seen Sunn O))) live, try to. It's... an experience! :D Take ear protection and make sure that you aren't feeling unwell on the day.

For the most part I think that's pretty sound thinking. The do tend to be more "dense" than other genres.

Oddly enough, they're the only "extreme" metal sub-genres I find fairly listenable.
-
Whilst I do think doom tends to be "heavier" than everything else, two of my three favourite albums on their are black metal smash-ups of sorts, Eater of Birds and The Codex Necro. Both utterly horrible works.

Well that's not true, they ARE playing riffs. They're just really, really, really slow ones. But it's structured. You can't sit it alongside, say, Merzbow.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Anaal Nathrakh again on Sunday. Love 'em, and I don't go for black metal (which they kind of aren't exactly).
-
I played with them on Friday. They were really a black metal/grindcore thing originally and are now more varied again. Dynamite live band - throughout all the lineups.

Yep
