Title: Neck pickup for PRS Hollowbody II?
Post by: DrKrunch on May 06, 2011, 07:22:20 AM
Hey guys--first post here.  I am considering a humbucker-sized P90 for the neck position of a PRS Hollowbody II (maple top and back, mahogany sides, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard).  I lean toward a warm, jazzy sort of clean sound but would like to use a little bit of dirt sometimes for Gilmour-esque lead tones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUASiDg-kg4&t=2m18s).  I think I want a Manhattan but am also considering a Mississippi Queen.  I know I'm not going to nail all of that exactly with one pickup and one guitar, but what do you guys recommend?  I'm open to other suggestions as well.  The bridge pickup is a PRS 57/08 that I think I'm going to keep, so I want something that would balance well with that.  Main amp is a Bogner Shiva, if that matters.

Also, while we're at it, does anyone have any tips for swapping pickups in this style of guitar?  I've only done it in solid body guitars where you can open the electronics cavity up, but there's no way to get into the back of this guitar without a hacksaw...and that's a no.  :)

Thanks for the help!

Sorry, one more question.  I'm in the USA.  Is it recommended that I order from a dealer here or just order the pickup straight from the BKP website?  Advantages/disadvantages to either option?

Thanks.  That looks like a nice and simple...uhh...hellish nightmare.  Hacksaw's not looking so bad anymore, haha.

I think you have BKP dealers in the US, but ordering direct isn't an issue.

I would go for a Manhattan, as I found the MQ to be a HOT pickup.  I think the MH would balance better with a PAF-style pickup such as the 57/08  :D

I second that. I had a MQ neck with a RiffRaff and it seemed a tad too hot for the bridge PU. No experience with the Manhattan though. What about a Stormy Monday?

Like Hunter says, Stormy Monday's are an option too.

The Stormy Monday sounds like a great pickup, but I think I want a single coil in this guitar.  It seems like Manhattan it is!

Just thinking aloud (in writing...!), but I wonder if you have to have the art-deco cover on the Manhattan, or is available with a plain MQ-style cover?
