K.K. Downing press release
Dear friends,
It is with much regret that I will not be with you this summer. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your concerns about my health. Please rest assured that I am O.K.
There has been an ongoing breakdown in working relationship between myself, elements of the band, and the band's management for some time.
Therefore I have decided to step down rather than to tour with negative sentiments as I feel that this would be a deception to you, our cherished fans.
However I would urge you to please support the Priest as I have no doubt that it will be a show not to be missed.
All my love and respect,
KK Downing

??? :?
Very odd.
-
Well I was thinking of going to see them again, but I think I'll pass if KK is not there. It just wouldn't be the same without the V off to the left of the stage.
-
Very odd indeed! "Elements of the band".... I'm guessing it's not the rhythm section.....
Will they replace him for the gigs, I wonder? Phil X might be available off the back of the Bon Jovi tour.
-
KK has already been replaced by a guy called Richard Faulkner (who I sort of know from when he was in Dirty Deeds and Metalworx)
-
I must admit I've never heard of him, but he looks the part.
Cool guitar! 8)

he looks the part.
Do people actually stand like that while they're playing? If so, why?
-
Richie is a big Zakk fan - and he used to play the Ozzy stuff really well in Metalworx
Not sure which axe he'll use in Priest

Well gosh.
And I thought he was doing it to impress the ladies.
-
surely KK could've stuck it out for the last tour FFS.
-
Yeah. It's a swine. But I'd booked my ticket. So I'm going and (shrug) trying not to worry too much...

absolutely my friend. its metal and it has to be that way.

yeah, i agree.
Tipton's clearly got the edge lick wise, but for me KKs the coolest guy in that band.
I may not see them on this last tour, but if I do, I hope the new guy plays a V.

At least I got to see them on the Painkiller tour (with Annihilator in support) at Newcastle City Hall (circa '91/92 ???). 'Awesome' doesn't begin to explain how good they were.

I saw them a few years back (Angel of Retribution tour, I think). "Loud" doesn't begin to explain how, er.... loud they were. Since then I've worn earplugs at gigs.
Oh, and I saw them at the first Monsters of Rock in 1980. The ol' memory's going!

Pretty much, yeah.
I saw them when they toured around '05 (with The Scorpions, I think it was) and they were fantastic. I've never been a massive Priest fan and was talked into buying tickets by my then girlfriend - great call by her! :)

I saw them last year or whenever it was on the Nostradamus tour at the Apollo in Manchester and before that all the way back in 1988 on the Ram it down tour at Hammersmith Odeon. The PA was 3/4 of the way up the $%ing wall each side of the stage. Loud doesn't come close...
-
Saw them in cardiff on the Priest Feast Tour (with Megadeth and Testament) me and my brother were right at the front for the first two but made a very well timed retreat to the bar for Priest, i thought that i was going to go deaf after 1 chord (not to mention blind from Mr Halfords incredibly shiny wizards garb!)
-
I saw them at on the 'Angel on Retribution' tour with The Scorps, and again at the Royal Albert Hall (also with The Scorps).
The Angel of Retribution show was simply mind blowing, a great show, great sound (albeit LOUD) and great music. It was probably the best show I've ever seen. Musical, yet so heavy.
-
Am I the only person on here that saw them on the British Steel tour then?
(Philly comes close with Donnington... didn't Rainbow blow up their backline or something while testing the pyro? Seem to remember reading something like that...)
I was at Glenn Tipton's feet - I went straight out and bought Unleashed in the East, played it to death. They must have played some British Steel stuff, but apart from Exciter, Unleashed in the East is the soundtrack to what I saw. Fabulous night, and I still love that album to bits. Funnily enough, when British Steel came out a few weeks later I didn't think much of it at all!!
I was at the same Ram it Down gig, Shobet. I went both nights with my bassist. He was into the "LA-look" Priest so was really disappointed they didn't bring the stage show. But I was well impressed with them dragging out the oldies instead, brought a tear to the eye. My drummer was there first night (they'd both heard me going on about Judas Priest for years), he thought they were ok but was disappointed by the guitar-playing... "I was expecting to be stunned... but it was all just widdly-widdly-widdly"
I bought Painkiller the day it came out, hated it - pretty much ignored them until the reunion. Still don't think much of it actually - there are some good tracks on it, and it's better than Ram it Down, but I just can't get past the opening track, not my sort of thing at all. I tried to listen to it the other day to see if it was worth getting it on CD... nope! I think that and Ram it Down are the only two that I don't have on CD.
Last saw them first night of the Angel of Retribution at Hammy Odeon. Scorpions were fabulous, Priest were a (very loud) pale shadow of what I'd liked about them, I was very sad afterwards :(. I understand from others that the second night was 200% better, but I've felt no desire to see them again since, I'd rather remember March 9th at the Colston Hall in 1980. I did like Nostradamus when it came out though.
I kind of said "goodbye" to them with the Angel of Retribution gig, so this doesn't upset me like it does others.
But I do find it very hard to understand KK not sticking it out for the last tour though. And sending out a press release like that as well...
Very strange.

I don't remember the backline blowing up, but it was 31 years ago! I do remember the atmosphere being a bit weird because (I think) we already knew it was Graham Bonnet's last gig. I was a big Rainbow fan at the time, they were very much my favourite band, so the other acts were just "support" for me really. That day was the first time I saw Scorpions too. :)
Unleashed in the East was my first Judas Priest album, I had an early copy with a free live EP including "Beyond the Realms of Death". I've never been a huge Priest fan to be honest, I like them but I only have 6 or 7 of the albums.
As for the Angel of Retribution tour, I don't know whether it was the first or second night I saw, so I don't know if it was the "good" or "bad" night. But it was very loud.
-
I saw Priest and Scorps both nights at Hammy O and the first night The Scorpions were so awesome that Priest had a hard act to follow and indeed they seemed a bit lacklustre
The second night the Scorps weren't quite so killer (they swapped Still Loving You for Wind of Change which slowed things down too much) , but Priest were really good - almost like they'd had a kick up the arse the night before and found their groove again.
I remember an interview with someone from Priest about playing at Donnington and they said they borrowed some of the fireworks and let them off at home - forgetting that they were much bigger than normal , and the next day the back garden looked like a war-zone

I think that means I was at the first night, thanks! :)

So did anyone see Judas Priest on American Idol?
They did "Living After Midnight" and "Breaking The Law" with James Durbin, one of the contestants who sang "You've Got Another Thing Comin'" earlier in the series.
(Richie was playing the white SG Custom, by the way)
-
Maybe KK quit because of having some taste?
-
Could be!
(Unlike me...)
-
I sold them (JP) some Earvana nuts earlier this week

At least they'll be in tune then
But, Philly... American Idol... sigh...

Well, in my defence, I haven't watched it much this series because the contestants were all really boring (not bad, just boring)
I did watch all the previous series though....
Actually (to attempt to defend the indefensible), the level of talent on AI is miles above our equivalent on The X Factor. Quite apart from putting much more emphasis on the actual singing, when they show the audition stages nearly all of these kids can play guitar or keyboards and do their own musical arrangements. I can't imagine any of them doing that on X Factor, it's all about the image, bloody stupid staging with lights, smoke, rollerblading dancers etc, and pigeonholing them in whatever little niche of the market Simon Cowell thinks he can exploit.
-
Have they actually made a decent album since the 70s?

I have enjoyed loads of Priest's post 70s work
British Steel, Screaming for vengeance, defenders of the faith, painkiller
And I liked Angel of Retribution too
Halford's Resurrection is still one of my favourite albums (dont know if that counts as JP though)

So KK has left, Boo Hoo no real loss there. New Blood, new guitarist, Richie Faulkner, Good about time they got somebody young and talented back in the band he may even improve the band overall.
Yes I know, I hear you say but he's not KK Downing, so what kk had his time now he can relax drink his warm cup of milk and go early to bed like most old people do, and slowly give up the will to rock, forever.
It's not that I have anything against old, I mean my pet dog is old and I still love my dog ( Get down Satan ).
These grumbling Priest fans should stop reflecting on nostalgia and look to a bright shining future the Priest is not dead, now is the time for the band to kick some ass and remind the world who the true masters of metal are.
And if you are going to see them on the Epitaph tour be sure to learn some Priest tunes on them guitars. You never know Glenn Tipton may throw a strop and walk off mid set, that means you can run up and fill in for the rest of the night, become the Redeemer, the saviour of the world tour, I only wish.

Dear Mr. Orifice,
Thank you very much for your recent letter to the K.K. Downing fan club. Whilst we appreciate your suggestions it's unfortunate that dear old uncle K.K. is so busy rocking with the other residents of the care home that he's not always able to reply to all his fans in person. As a token of our appreciation of your heartfelt letter please accept this pair of piss stained slippers and the limited edition 'I love KK' badge. Or button, if you're one of those colonials.
We look forward to your continuing support and hope to see you on tour. Keep on keeping it real kids!
K.K. Downing.
PP Ivor Bigun.
