I've been looking at getting a Marshall JVM410H for a while now as I want versatility, at least 3 channels and 2 master volumes but Laneys seem very well priced for similar specs. The VH100R seems a great price and I may have a chance of a TT100H so I wondered if anyone could tell me what they're like as nobody local stocks them.
-
I've had 2 VC30's and a VC15. The all sounded great and never missed a beat....
-
Love my GH50L :)
-
I've had a VC-30 and a Lionheart. Both good amps with the Lionheart ticking more 'tone' boxes for me.
-
Well this is all very promising :D
I've already mentioned the basic requirements I have of the amp and I will be using it in a Rock covers band so it needs to be able to do cleans, a hot rodded 80s Metal sound and more modern Metal like Metallica (it's more modern to me) and maybe Disturbed. This being said, I have two basic questions:
1) Are the TT and VH100R amps comparable to something like the Marshall JVM or is the Marshall simply better?
2) Between the TT100H and VH100R, is either one better for what I'm looking for or is it much the same? I ask because the TT is cheaper :D
-
I'd personally go with a marshall TSL or JVM
or if you can find one at a good price a 6100.
But that's just personal preference as i find laney amps to general sound good but are very bland sounding and lack character
-
I've never found Laney's to be bland and lacking character! I loved my GH50L :D

To me they've always sounded good but they dont have anything that really leaps out to me.
-
I kind of agree with Toe-Knee. For me the GH gives me a very good rock and metal sound but doesn't have loads of character like a Marshall's "roar" for example. That doesn't mean it sounds bad though!

That's exactly what i was trying to get at. I'm just cr@p at wording things.

+1 (not that I think that the modern marshalls have much character, I mean compared to the real high-end/boutique amps). that was my feeling with the vc30 and vc15- they were killer for the money (this was a couple of years back when you could get the 30 new for £300 and the 15 new for little more than £200), but if you could spend more you could get a more sophisiticated tone.
That being said I love my gh50l. But it is a bit rawer/grittier than a lot of the higher-end high gainers, it's more of a hot-rodded marshall vibe- if you like that or that's what you're going for, it's great, but if you're used to the more refined, smoother take on high gain that a lot of the higher-end amps have, you might not. Again, it's awesome for the money (I got mine for less than £400 new), but I wouldn't take it over a soldano or anything like that, lol.
The vh100r is similar to the gh, I think (it gets the rep of basically being a gh with an added clean channel, but it's ages since I've tried one).
Really liked the tt when I tried it, but again it's ages since I tried one. I'd need to try both the vh and tt head to head against the jvm to be sure which i preferred.

Mmmmm, food for thought. I've found a TT100H for £400 and a JVM 410H usually goes for about £600 so maybe the Marshall is simply worth the extra. I'm not sure what else I could get that is a similar spec for £600 used. The only other option I've come up with is maybe a Peavey Classic 50 and get my distorted tones with pedals as long as it will still take a good boost for solos, which my DSL401 doesn't do.
-
The cleans of the Peavey Classic are really nice. Had an 4x10-combo for years, great allrounder. Just place a Suhr-Riot or something similar in front and you have big distorted tones, even at low levels
-
Marshall JVM. It's midi switching is amazing and people underestimate it's versatility.
Laney's are good but I didn't like the switching options on the VH100R and I didn't like the tone of the TT100.
-
You also need to know that the JVM takes some time to dial in because it's so versatile. The memorisation is easy-peasy with the spiffing footswitch or a midi footboard, but have a look at the JVM forum to find out wot's wot. The forum is usually very helpful.
Personally, I love the JVM, it's got terrific cleans by any standards and you can get real JMP, JCM etc sounds at the stomp of a button jason.

I would also go with the JVM simply because it does what you'd expect from it.
-
Try to pick up a Hughes & Kettner Trilogy. I like that amp and it's in the JVM-pricerange.
-
versatility = volume/tone/pickup selector/booster
just grab a 70's JMP
:D :D :D

There's a few of those Hughes & Kettner amps I like the look of but their limitation is that they don't come up on Ebay anything like as frequently as JVMs.

Actually, a while ago I toyed with the idea of finding a JMP-1 to use as a preamp and then some sort of valve power amp such as anu Valve amp or a Marshall 50/50. The problem was that a number of people told me that there just wasn't enough gain on tap for what I wanted as I go up to Metallica/Disturbed levels, though I suppose pedals would help. I really don't know anything about this kind of setup at all. I know I'd need the JMP and I know I'd need a power amp. I'm guessing I could use anything as a power amp and I already have a cabinet. How do pedals connect to this sort of setup? If I went JMP and a rack mounted power amp, presumably I'd need somewhere to mount them so what do I look for and what do they cost? Is there anything else I'd need to consider?

I think Eric was referring to a 70s JMP head, not the JMP1 preamp.
I had a JMP1 for a few years and I don't think you'd have any issues gainwise from the bands you mentioned. I always had an issue with the JMP1 sounding a bit too scooped for my tastes, but I guess with an external EQ etc that could be remedied.

yeah, I meant the amp heads
the JMP-1 preamp drive is solid state, just like the JCM900 4100 and the valvestate series

i've had loads of Laney's x3 GH50's, x2 VC30's, LC15, Chrome-o-zone, LC15R, VH100R, and a Pro-Tube AOR100. I've also had a DSL50, DSL401 and a TSL601.
I always sold the Laneys to fund the next amp etc, but always ended up coming back to them. Especially the GH50, such a great sounding amp, and in my opinion what a DSL SHOULD sound like, instead of the thin fizzy sound that is modern Marshall.
The VH100r is a good amp, if you need all those options of twin channels each with switchable gain, 3 fx loops etc. It's blistering loud as well. Very rarely did i get it past 1.5 on the volume, i only get the GH up to 4! I used to have to fun my TSL master flat out, weird. I prefer the GH running EL34, all of mine came with 6L6. Also the Bias switch is only a rough guide, my local tech adjusted the bias properly internally other wise it would be quite under biased with EL34's onthe EL34 bias setting.
And reliability, none of my Laneys have EVER gone wrong. Maybe i was unlucky but All of the Marshalls failed on me, more than once.

They are, but with a decent valve power amp they can still get nice tones out of them.
I had mine with an EL84 20w a side Marshall power amp and it was a really nice clean sound.
I found the EL84s to not be what I wanted when it came to the OD tones of the JMP1, for for clean and crunch it was good.

I've had an LC-50 and, more recently, a VC30 2x12. Both were cracking amps, for different jobs. The LC50 nailed the eighties Marshall thing for me, bang on. The Vc30 has one of the sweetest clean tones available anywhere below the "stupid money" level of things. The drive is admittedly not as good, but it's not really a hard rock amp. That being said, with the all stops pulled out, a good treble booster, a 1x15 extension cabinet and a set of BK's finest p-90's, It could kick out Stoner tone to die for.
The HH speaqkers are a bit pony, though, but complaining any factory amp has less than great speakers is kind of redundant.
