Had an offer to swap my Pig 90 for a Cold Sweat pickup and wondering whether anyone's tried the CS in an SG (all mahogany)? First thought is it may be too bright/harsh. The current pickup is a 498T (AV magnet afaik) which to be honest I prefer to the Pig 90 in this particular guitar, just seems to suit it better. The kind of tone I seem to be going for now is kind of modern hard rock/metally but with a vintagey sort of vibe - similar to Every Time I Die (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6OXX2vcaZU) although I don't expect that kind of fatness from an SG!
One thing I don't like about the Gibson pickups is that lead notes don't seem to sustain well and the harmonics don't really "jump out" - seems like harmonics are a CS strong point.

I reckon it would work well Tom. I had one in a Korina McCarty for a while, and they did 80s Ozzy/Dio gained stuff really well. I found it a little 'clinical' when clean, but not harsh or spiky. I just prefer a warmer clean tone.
I think PhillyQ has Cold Sweats in his PRS Mira and should be able to comment too? They're actually my old pickups!

Yeah I very rarely play clean so that wouldn't be a problem, and if I do it's with the neck pickup anyway!

They're not actually in my (Korina) Mira, yet, but they will be going in there one day.... honest!
I have previously tried a set of Cold Sweats (borrowed from Hunter) in my Tokai SG, and I think they work extremely well. The bridge pickup is tight and bright with a balanced (let's not say scooped) midrange so it doesn't do the muddy-in-mahogany thing at all. But it's not too bright or harsh.
I think the relative lack of mids makes it better for crunch rhythm than singing leads - but if you get a CS neck as well(!), that's absolutely fantastic for lead playing. As a set, they're perfect for an SG if you want to go hotter-than-vintage.

I have a Cold Sweat in the bridge of that Ash bodied Strat I got from you Tom and I don't find it to be overy bright, so I'm sure it'd be fine in a Mahogany bodied SG :)

I have a set in an all mahogany BC Rich Mockingbird and they sound really good in that
