Title: new pickup for my flying v
Post by: Madsakre on May 10, 2011, 11:06:41 AM
Hi since im changing alot of my equipment atm i have realised that i need a new pickup in my flying v.

right now i have a cpig 90 in it, which i love. But its too over satuated and skinny for the rig i use now.
it does not go well with my hm-2 pedal through a live volume amp.

since i own alot of bkp's i can say that the apig is almost the perfect candidate for the hm-2 setup. But only almost. I demand a pickup which is alot more tight for staccato riffing. And has a bit more picking attack. I sorta stand between getting a aftermath of a cold sweat.

suggestions and opinions please :-)

Did you experiment with the Miracle Man you already have in the V?

No but i have it in a almost spec wise similar guitar, and its not that voicing i wish. I want more mids,  since the a pig does it all so well, it makes me think of trying another alnico model. Just not the nailbomb, i dont like that pickup at all

That would narrow it done to the HD and the BD. To be honest, for the rather extreme music you make, both might not be the best choice. The BD is clearer though. Have you tried it?

If you tune quite low it might be just perfect for that. I find it has a very growly character.

I think the CS would make a nice match for the neck. I will keep things clear, but fluid.

I would go for the Aftermath.

It has the required tightness, Is hot enough but not too hot.

And is brilliant for staccato riffing and has excellent pick attack.

I don't think any others match your requirements as exact as the AM does

Ah, sorry, read neck instead of new  8)

Yes, then I would look at the Aftermath or the Painkiller.

the painkiller is the closest one in specs
but the c-pig is the only model grindy and bassy enough to be compared with a 500t

Dude, leave the naming to the BKP officials, no more pabulum or cr@p...
steal a baby from someone if you want to give names to things :D

Well im getting second thoughts on the riff raff choice. I tried the exact same guitar with a SD pearly gates in the bridge, and it was WAY too skinny for the sound i wanted. I want the pickup to be tight, but not fizzy, and should have enough bottom end to suit my needs. Im still thinking about the Black dog or maybe another a5 warpig. But the warpig is not tight enough for the staccato but the tone is full enough, and voiced the way i like. But it has too much gain too.

So if the riff raff is as skinny as the pearly gates, then its a no-no.

you can always do an A5 mule if you're worried about a riff raff sounding thin

isnt that more or less a black dog?

No, the Black Dog uses a different type of wire in the pickup coils.

If anything, an AV Mule is closer to the Riff Raff itself.... I think the main difference may be that the Mule has an "offset" wind (different numbers of turns of wire on each coil) whereas the Riff Raff has more of a balanced/symmetrical wind.

Cool bro.
Do you guys have any idea how i could get a pickup voiced similar to the warpig, just with less output and a tad tighter?

1. What makes you think the RiffRaff would be similar to the Pearly Gates????

2. Black Dog would be a good choice IMO.

1. I Dont know, i just tried the pearly gates in my guitar because i could. I know the gates is alnico II. but still.

2. I kinda lean to a black dog too. But well.. i could order both, bare knuckles are not hard to sell again.

Though if Tim says RiffRaff there is probably a reason why.
