I need some good headphones for working on music on my laptop. They should be fairly flat for monitoring but I'll switch to dedicated monitor speaker for final mixes anyway so they just need to be of a decent quality - they don't have to be top range monitor headphones.
I'm on a budget so let me know what bargains there are.....

I use Etymotic ER4S (http://www.etymotic.com/ephp/er4-ts.aspx) in ear headphones for general listening and mixing/monitoring at night and in the house.
Pretty flat frequency response (see perceived FR in graph on link), and added benefit of a good amount of isolation from outside noise.
Can be had for £150, plus you can get custom moulds (I can recommend this option)
Seems pretty accurate when compared to my Yamaha MSP10 studio monitors.

Thanks Bob, I'm thinking more along the line of big cans though.
But the ER's look good....

What budget are we talking about here?
My default recommendation are ATH M50s. Because they're awesome. Better than many headphones I've heard at twice the price.

Well, around this budget would be nice

But if £70 does not buy anything much good I suppose I could stretch a bit further.....

Not familiar with that model. Its not at all inconceivable that you can get some good phones for less than £100, but most that I've heard arent.
Edit - not to sound like some sort of price snob there, its just true of my observations. Its also true that some very expensive phones arent very good, and can easily be bettered by cheaper ones.

Grado SR80s for me :) I think they're about £60-80 and sound great.
edit - looks like they've gone up in price quite a bit. They're really nice headphones though. Very clear and natural sounding to me.

Get these. I am. And two of my friends are/have too.

I also have the Audio-technica M50s - on MDV's recommendation I might add - and they are fantastic. No, they're not a set of monitors, but I find I can get consistent and well-balanced mixes with these. Definitely worth the money!

I have Beyerdynamic DT770, the 250 Ohm version; they are supposedly a studio standard.
I don't remember what they cost, sorry.

I was recommended the Sennheiser HD 280 pro headphones and have been well pleased with them. They go for around £90 and get good reviews.

Apologies for the threadnomancy but I took your advice and you weren't kidding. These 'phones sound great, especially for the money. Am now sat listening to Amon Tobin at an acceptable volume (to me) and not bothering another soul in the studio. Thanks!
