Post by: nfe on May 17, 2011, 02:16:38 PM
Someone stuck this on another forum, I really don't like it but figure they have some fans here that might not have heard it :)

the beginning of this so far is awful so cluttered and messy sounding and the vocals :S

Korn did a better job and that's saying something :P

And i don't dislike Periphery btw i enjoy some of there stuff but this is just terrible

just listened to it again.

And i think the drums in the clean section are the main thing that ruins those parts its just a huge cluster$%&#

It's a total mess, yeah. Production is dreadful, vocals poor, embarrassingly so at the gruffer bits, and overproduced in the clean parts, the solo is horrid (the bits that aren't just what Hammet did) and those drums...

I'm not a fan anyway really, but for a band that undeniably have great production values and can put a tune together I was surprised just how terrible I found it.

Vocals are too loud and "in front" for starters. The rest of the mix is overly compressed, much more mushy than I expect from Misha. I thought the guitar leads had great tone though.

Oh, yeah. This.

Its $%&#ing horrific.

I have nothing against perirphery; they dont do anything resembling 'my thing', but they're good musicians, do what they do well, and mad props for getting to where they are by bulb being at the bleeding edge of the home recording thing and spamming forums relentlesly self promoting. That aint easy.

But they just took a tune that derives its strength from stark, bleak, direct sounds and simple-but-strong motifs and beats, played with authority, and $%&#ed it in the arse.

If the original track were a heavyweight boxer, then perophery just sent him into the ring wearing a pink leotard and covered in body glitter.

the first 30 odd seconds had me pretty excited, but alas i was let down.

at least there was a related video: As I Lay Dying - War Ensemble (SLAYERRRR) which is pretty decent :)

Sigh........there are still people around that don't know that you should leave classic songs like One the hell alone.

I may be wrong, but it sounds to me like there's some really overdone compression on the drums which is kicking in and out. That and way too much of some odd reverb effect on the snare and cymbals makes the sextuplet section very very strange sounding.

I wasn't going to be too negative until it got very Sega towards the end...
