Title: Mainstream tapping?
Post by: Sifu Ben on May 30, 2011, 04:21:58 PM
Sat watching Kerrang and numerous effectively punk bands seem to be using rhythmic tapping to create melody. Has tapping been redeemed?

"virtuosic" techniques in general have been making a big comeback the last half decade or so.

Yeah, but I'm not talking about screaming solos in metalcore bands, I'm talking about it being used as just another melodic tool by bands who would typically eschew virtuosity.

What band?

Those daft Sum 41 characters had widdly solos and tapped melodies and stuff in pop punk tunes in the early 2000's, too. Probably lots more did but they're the only one I'm familiar with.

Stuff like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIKqs1PGoDc (excuse the long, non song intro)
It's not just one or two though, it seems like loads of these type of bands are doing it now.

Hold on. Punk?!

I have to say I don't think this is particularly new in music that sounds like that, maybe it just used to be on telly less.

is that what is referred to as 'crunkcore'... stuff like hollywood undead and brokencyde?
seems that the tapping in that song is an attempt to recreate a synth effect you'd find in a similar pop tune.
personally, I can't say I'm a fan. I agree with NFE in that it's just on tele more.

No, I'd say that it would probably be what's referred to as emo-core (although obviously that's a redundant term).
This is crunk-core http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE_ppeZXC-E&feature=fvst
It's not what I'd usually listen to, like I said, I had Kerrang on and heard it. Surely on TV more equals more mainstream?

Yes, and Kerrang is the most mainstream of "rock" channels, but it seemed you were saying that tapping and more "technical" playing is new to bands of that style, I don't think it is, I just think bands of that style are have become more mainstream.
