check this out, I was considering a cheapy mandolin, but thought what the hell - might as well get a nice one
I've got the bluegrass lessons bookmarked online already - yeeeeeehaaaaaa!!!!
-
They are very cool things to look at, if nothing else! Was it much more expensive than the Epiphone one?
-
ah nice :D
-
Cool. I had my first ever play on one a few weeks ago- t'was fun and I'd like to get one.

-
Sounds a good deal!

there was a £800 mandolin in Guitar Guitar recently (can't remember the brand), but I had a bit of a play and it's been nagging away at me since.
I can't imagine that I'm gonna be lumping amps, cabs, PAs etc.. around for much longer with my arthritis, so I figure I need to find a new angle. Anyway, bluegrass is fun music to play and worlds away from what I usually play. I know of two folk 'get-togethers' round here, so I'm gonna turn up and see if someone will take me under their wing (so to speak).
-
I don't wanna be anal about it, but this should be called NMD, not NGD.
So HNMD to you!! :P
-
I always fancy something a little out of the ordinary. HNMD!
I hope some of the local "mandoliners" will take you under their wing.
I want an ukulele!
-
Nice :D
I've been wondering about mandolin myself, and banjo. At the moment banjo just sneaks ahead for me slightly.

my bass player had a banjo up until recently - he was pretty good on it too.
-
Have an old mandolin should really get learning some nickelcreek
-
I've had a few bouzoukis and mandolas, wonderful things and easy to get competent enough on to play tunes really quickly. I could never get on with the tiny wee frets on mandolins, though.
-
expect some youtube videos of my first mandolin efforts in the coming week :D
I've been told I need to learn Losing My Religion and Copperhead Road for my band, but the mid-section in Stonehenge will come before anything.

i've occasionally fancied a mandolin. nice one man!
-
nice have fun with it

About 3 years ago someone asked me to find him a mandolin and I managed to get an ex demo all solid hand carved Eastman for £235. As soon as I got it out of the case I knew I was keeping it. The thing is a joy, but I've only ever learnt a few chords on it. However just strumming it sounds fantastic, mandolins really cut through and are wonderfully rhythmic.

That Eastman is NICE, real quality and a great price.
I prefer the F-type mandolins though on an aesthetic level.
-
Well I agree on the F types, they look so splendidly oldie worldie. It's nice to know you're getting into bluegrass. Way back when I was 21 I got so into it I bought a 5 string banjo and those crazy metal picks and got into that area, but then it dawned on me that I'd stopped playing guitar and I did a u-turn. Still love the music though.
What do you think of this? They're not a high end bluegrass band, but I really like it because it sounds so natural.

love the amp behind it

I like it alot, very unpretentious - I like that old time stripped-down feel.
btw, I'm now mastered the mandolin part in Stonehenge and a turnaround in D and A, woo!!!!
-
and here it is again - photo opportunity :D
-
You look like one happy bugger :D
Nice photo.

It's only $10k - and I thought PRS' were crazy expensive

its a hand carved acoustic archtop instrument, clearly top quality materials throughout - takes a lot more work than any electric guitar and i reckon that justifies a lot of the expense
i had a new instrument day recently, i built myself a tenor ukulele from a stew-mac kit - it sounds awesome and makes me happy every time i strum it. (its currently receiving a a copper/red/wood experimental finish)
They do a few different mandolin kits i keep eyeing up, but the proper f5-style ones like this are not cheap!
-
you should give one a bash Wez - I'll test drive it for you :D
-
i have considered it.
i used to get a lot of fancy wood from larry davis in the states, and his website (which has not been updated since i started building guitars) has a lovely set for an F5 listed on it

i think i asked about it 7 years ago and it was long gone then

Speaking of Collings, I must say I really like the look of their electrics - beautiful refined versions of some Gibson classics.

wow, he's pretty damn good - getting the notes THAT clean and fast at the same time is really tough.
I like the real old scratchy-sounding mandolin stuff, that folk country/blues stuff...

Its a genre I've barely dipped my toe into, but I immediately feel drawn this rawer style.

got the mando back today - a setup and fresh strings has really made a difference, well worth £28.00
