Title: I was on an amp fest this weekend
Post by: hunter on May 31, 2011, 09:07:56 PM
So we had this amp fest at Yoeris place here in Belgium, and there were very good players and top notch gear. We had a '68 Plexi and some more very nice Marshalls, some handmade amps (Olaf Krampe amplification), 2 SLO100s, my XTC and Cornford, an Elmwood M60, a BigTone100 (great amp!) and so on and so forth, some rack stuff etc.

Loads of Tylers were there, about 6 or 7 different ones, and other great guitars too.

Great, great gear really.

Playing and listening to others play I realised that I had less gain in the fingers as some other players. What I mean is that I tend to reach for the gain knob on the amp, trying to get more overtones and a livelier gain structure. But all this does at volume is to make the tone thin and drop off in sonic mush. There were especially two very accomplished players, who sounded like a lot of gain when they played, but I actually realised the gain was way down. Like their leads were kind of where i had played rhythm.

I tried playing with less gain today and it's tempting to turn it up more, to get that legato-guitar-plays-itself feel, but I wanna stick to less and learn again to milk the notes off the guitar with more finger effort.

My conclusion from the amp fest actually is that amps and guitars don't matter so much, they pretty much all sounded great there, but I wanna focus more on playing and finger technique again.

Yep, the old tone is in the fingers thing!

Once you get a good guitar and amp, the rest is down to the player...

^ nah certain gear lets you get haunting mids and fragile harmonics. something about a crystal lattice.

Seriously though, yeah tone's in the fingers. Once your gear is a certain quality, it's up to the player.

is that yoeri (franzen? think that was his surname. very nice dude, gave me loads of advice regarding my engl) from the old engl forum, hunter? i think he was from belgium and liked tylers...

Yeah that's Yoeri, he was a big Engl fan and recently sold his last one (a slowhand special edition blackmore). He now has the 68 Plexi, a 71 or so Super Lead, an Elmwood M60 (he bought for silly cheap) and the rack with CAE SE3+SE and stuff. He also has 4 Tylers, awesome guitars indeed!

One of the nicest blokes on the planet for sure!

Yep, I sound equally bad on cheap or expensive gear.

A big part of tone is in the fingers, as we all agree. It's complex because you have heavy handed players like stevie
ray and light touch like ritchie blackmore and then great fluidity like satch, it's not one thing.
when i first heard spanish fly on the early vh11? album i coudn't believe his (eddies) technique on a classical guitar.
i think he was just arseing about too.tone is technique or is certainly bound up in it, a player who has 'it' sounds great through anything, no exceptions.
nothing wrong with good gear though, especially if its built to last a lifetime like a slo.(or cornford 8)
