I've always found Corts to be very good quality instruments.
They used to make a lot of the ibanez models up until late 2009
I doubt you can go wrong with it for that price though.
-
Cort is the owner of most of the factories where other brands have their guitars made. They are pretty high quality instruments for their price
-
It has to be said, that particular Cort looks like an extremely low-budget model.
It's not their usual logo, but maybe it's an older guitar. I'm no expert on the brand.
But still, $35.....

Yeah, I emailed him just to get a jump on it. I did end up learning that guitar was made for one run in Korea very shortly after the first Jackson model was introduced in the 80's. This makes sense to me with the body that high up on the neck and the standard Fender style trem. Reported to be a great player as well so I've got my fingers crossed I get a call. Nothing wrong with a new cheap ass guitar day. If worse comes to worse, it's certainly worth $35 and the trip to sacrifice for learning how to refret a neck. :D

Well, I'm gonna go pick it up in an hour. He's meeting me halfway. :idiot2:
So there's that, but I found some videos on how the Cort company treats their workers so I'm feeling kinda cr@ppy about that. It's really saddening to see skilled people getting treated like that and it's hard to stop feeding this monster because they make guitars for so many companies. Wiki said they make guitars for Ibanez, Parkwood, ESP, Schecter, G&L Tribute series, Avalon and others. They work them to death, treat them like dirt while on the job and then fire them or replace them while they are not at work. It would take 3-4 months of average Cort worker pay to buy one of the guitars they make. The worst part is almost all of us has had an instrument that went through these poor soul's hands.

that "scratch by the side of the neck on the body is a split
I can't really complain @ $35 but check it before buying up.

It's just defective paint, I picked some off. I'm gonna hollow out that neck joint some and refinish so no biggy. The neck and body both have a real thick coat on there judging by what I picked off. I have no idea right now what's underneath this thick coating of paint, but it is a RESONANT SOB and very loud acoustically. The neck weight feels about right for maple and the body about right for basswood, but I'll be stripping it tonight or tomorrow and we'll see. There's no wear to the frets at all. The seller's grandfather was in the instrument biz and this was a left over bit sitting since he passed in the early 90s, so basically new. The action was really high, but I fixed that real quick and just got done jamming out on it. Both pups were way way better than I expected. I actually liked some aspects of the neck better than the 85s I'm currently using. Nice aftermarket black knurled knobs, but cr@ppy MOTO inlays. Pretty good player. Neck is thicker than what I'm used to, but I'll shave her down after I get this gross white paint off of it. All in all, I liked playing it better than my RR3 which is my other budget axe atm. It doesn't feel sterile at all, but still feels a bit cheap with how light it is. Nowhere near my RR1, but better than the RR3.
Edit: I just took the trem cover off and it's a plywood body! WTF I like this plywood better than the alder in my RR3? Wow.
-
Heh, cool. Refin it in clear for a laugh!
-
Nice find. I paid a whole £5 for an acoustic at the car boot sale (well, £6 including a toy car for my lad) and I love it. It's plywood too.
I've said it a number of times on here, but if you're stripping that type of cheap finish off, then use emery cloth and not sandpaper, it'll come off about 50 times faster and easier. Wear a mask too, cause that cr@ps nasty.

That was the plan, but stained first. I'm gonna own that shite. Pics later tonight. I coated the back with stripper and let it go overnight. Just coated the front and now I'm off for the day. I tried sanding it a bit first, but as Tone monkey said, it's some nasty powdery cr@p made out of who knows what. What a surprise about the ply though. I've only played one ply guitar, a Musicyo Kramer. It was horrible. I was poking at the ply with a knife(which is what we Americans do to objects we don't quite understand) and it's layers of a very soft wood and something much harder. Simulated Ash? The neck turned out to be maple.

Added points for a trans burst!
-
How many points for Minwax Jacobean stain and wipe on poly? I'm not looking to spend much money here, just using what I have laying around. Here's two coats of poly wiped on the PlyRhoads:

edit: I'll mask off and spray the cavities flat black sometime before it's back together. Not going to alter the neck joint as it's probably not too strong as it is.
-
That looks pretty decent actually!
-
How about just an oil finish. That stained body looks great as is and oil would just bring it out that much more and it would feel lovely.
-
Ha! Thanks Philly. That's what 20 mins of sanding the primer and stripper residue on 80 grit gets you. Didn't even go to 120 before I started applications. It's fine though. Looks and feels good with 6 wipes, wire wool after the 3rd. Spent some time on the neck, now. Reshaping it was quick, but they put some kind of man made laminate on the headstock face which was a pain and I ran out of paper before it all came off. It wouldn't peel and was reddish orange under the white topcoat. I can say it is kinda fun just running through this real fast with no real concern for the end product or total failure.
I'm trying to keep it real low cost, Choucas. Those polymerized Danish oils and whatnot aren't too different for me to go out and buy a new can vs finishing the one I'm using now. It's a low-gloss one and it ends up a real thin finish so "close enough" I guess. It's not like PlyRhoads will be my #1. It's just for fun.
So it played pretty well the other night, surprised me really. Gonna shell out a little bit more. All the little girls can't be belle of the ball, but I feel I should put a little lipstick on this piggy just so she feels pretty. I have some black tuners sitting in a box someone gave me, so I'm gonna ream the holes and install them as the ones that were on it were pretty hard to dial in. Might as well shell out $26 for a black trem from Guitar Fetish while I'm at it. Ah, $%. I'm gonna need a black nut now. Ok, if I can keep it under $75 total, guitar included, I'll be good.
-
Put it back together with the black tuners and without the pup rings. Deciding to not put any extra money in it. Screw the black trem. It'll be fine on the wall where it'll be mostly just looking the part. Was a fun project and I'll probably pick it up and tune it every once in awhile at least.
