Title: Exciting times ahead!
Post by: _tom_ on June 03, 2011, 07:21:46 PM
Just booked myself a one-way flight to Vancouver in August! I have a working holiday visa and hoping to stay out there for as long as possible, just hope the job situation is better there than it is here :)

I've saved enough money to live in Whistler for two months and have the accomodation lined up already, just need to make the payment. Also have enough to buy a 2nd hand bike when I'm there, so if nothing else it will be 2 months of mountain biking and drinking :D Exciting and a bit scary at the same time.

Didn't know that actually, I heard it was all in Toronto but I've got my heart set on BC for the mountain biking! I might apply for a few things in Vancouver then but will be in Whistler for the majority of my stay I think - at least for the first 2 months.

No worries Steve, I think I'm sorted with ACE Insurance anyway - cheapest comprehensive insurance I can find and they cover everything I need to meet the IEC standards :)

Yeah Vancouver is the stand in city for near enough every genre-tv series. The university turns up on all sorts of planets in Startrek and Stargate, particularly

I spent three weeks in Canada but all in Ontario, it was great there though. Have a smasher!

Yeah, and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan should really have been called Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Spends a Lot of Time on a Boat and then Visits Vancouver....

Have a good time Tom!

Good luck mate.  My bro took a long break in Vancouver and loved it, really nice people so he says.

38thBeatle - Do you do insurance? I need a quote for some bits (PL etc).  If so, then could you drop me a PM.

Well I've been in Whistler for 2 days now after a weekend in Vancouver, it's brilliant so far :D Not sure whether I will be staying for longer than 2 months - really depends whether I meet anyone I can start to become friends with! At the minute I'm the only person living in the upstairs of the condo I'm staying in, and the guys downstairs will be leaving soon plus are already in their little cliquey group of friends. It's alright for now but I can see it starting to feel a bit lonely as time goes on. Will just have to see how it goes.

I've been putting a selection of photos on a tumblr blog so that people at home can just visit that rather than me having to email everyone the same photos - it's here if anyone wants to have a look http://beastinbc.tumblr.com/

Great stuff Tom, looks great. I wouldn't get too down hearted about not meeting anyone just yet - I'm sure something will happen. Personally I would love to have a bit of time on my own!

Hope it works out for you.

Hi Tom, I moved to New York when I was 25 and didn't know anyone when I got there.  It took a few weeks to get to know people, but it does happen.  I started playing in a bar near my apartment and met a lot of friends through that.  They had a stand up night and then I got a bass playing spot with a band who hung out there and met a girl who played harp and sang, and went out with her a bit.  You'll be amazed how soon you will meet people.

Enjoy yourself and don't worry - once you start to work you'll meet more people too.  The pictures look great, but this is summer there!  Winter is awesome if you ski or board.

Well things didn't work out exactly as I'd hoped and I had to fly back home on Sunday :( Couldn't afford another months rent without a job and everyone I applied to said I don't have enough experience - pretty much all the jobs were customer service type and the only experience I have of that is a summer at Tesco. It's alright being back here, great to see friends and family again and awesome to play my own guitars rather than the ones at open mic nights!

Bit disappointed but I'm hoping I can just get back into a job and save up enough to go back out to Whistler for the bike season again next summer  :D
