Title: Need some help in choosing pickups.
Post by: AS R on June 08, 2011, 09:44:46 PM
Hi, I want to replace the pickups in my Tokai guitar, and I would like to hear some suggestions.

I want pickups for a classic rock sound and some blues. I want to get the sound of Led Zeppelin (stairway to heaven solo, since i've been loving you), Guns N roses.. The classic Les Paul guitar sound. I want also a good clean and a lot of sustain.

Some guy in the local store I went to suggested me to put the Mule at the neck and the Black Dog at the bridge. But maybe it would be better to put a pair of Mules or a pair of Black Dogs ?

Thanks, Lidor.

I'm searching Bare Knuckles pickups too and I had the doubts you have with your humbuckers(I'm playing your styles and a bit heavier).

You can read some in the topic I opened here, we closed styles so it may help you to read there.
In adittion, I understand that you are ido15 from musictalk, you can check the topic I opened there about buying new effect and upgrade the guitar(you was in this topic, asking about the pickups). People gave me helping information there.

There's no problem with the Black Dog/Mule combination, but I personally would recommend the calibrated Mule set for the ultimate classic Les Paul tone.
You might want to note that the Stairway to Heaven solo was recorded with a Telecaster though ;)

Blues and GnRs is probably more AII Stormy Mondays than Mules! although the Mules will be better at the higher gain stuff!

Yep, I'll say Mules as well.

I don't do GnR, but I do a lot of blues/rock. My Tokai Love Rock with Mules happily satisfies all my Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Paul Kossoff, early Fleetwood Mac, Beano-era Clapton, Allman Brothers, etc, etc, cravings.

But like Nolly says, you'd be surprised at how useful a telecaster might be if you're really after Jimmy Page

(Out of interest, does anyone know what he used for Since I've Been Loving You? I suspect it was a Les Paul, I've always assumed it was, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that it was a telecaster as well...)
