Title: Help me choose a pickup!
Post by: izzyprad on June 11, 2011, 10:00:37 PM
I am looking for a bare knuckle pickup for my Ernie Ball Music Man JP7 - 7 String Guitar (Basswood body/maple neck/Rosewood fret) for recording an album. I am looking to change my D-sonic pickup in the bridge.

I manily use Mesa Tripple rectifier/ Peavey 5150/ Deizel VH4 amp models from my Axe Fx guitar processor, and D'Addario 0.009s string. I play metal, but nothing extreme. I am looking for a cross between Dimarzio Crunch lab/D-Sonic. Something that is rich/tight bass/decent amount of highs/articulate.

Please advise.

I think Nailbombs are for you, donŽt know if ceramic or alnico are better for you. Depens on how you like your eq to be in detail. My guess would be though that youŽd fare better with alnico.
With the nailbomb you have a rich Pu that is has agressive (dirty) rock / metal mids, without going overboard. Has a bit of a 90s feel to it and has a vintage rock character somewhere in its tone. Generally, this things has character. Also it is very versatile, so depending on your gear, playing and PU height you can get a wide variety of tones.
I do think that it is the closest BKP to the crunchlab, which is a great PU, but...well I think of it like: There is a CL we get and then thereŽs a CL Petrucci gets...and this is it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Any thoughts on Miracle Man or Pain Killer?

Sorry, unfortunately BKP doesn't make anything that mediocre.  :D

But yeah, Miracle Man or Nailbomb would work. The first is more metal, the second warmer and very versatile. If you downtune a lot I'd probably give the MM the edge.
I don't know the ceramic version of the Nailbomb, I only have the alnico one, sorry.
