background: im contemplating buying a used 72 ri thinline but i already know i hate those stupid reproduction widerange humbuckers. i also know that the stock pickups are larger than standard humbuckers. im going to get a custom pickguard to accomidate normal hb's. im thinking mules as i use an sg with p90s, and normal teles and want to keep the ouput in the same ball park. i have a black dog sitting around but i think itll prove to be too midrangy in the semi hollowbody. thoughts?

If you could tell us a bit more about the style you play and what tone you´re looking for it would be much easier to help, cause right now I know you don´t want high output and not too much mids...which is not much to go by ;)

I have a Thinline with normal Tele pickups, not humbuckers, but it still has the ash body like your '72 RI. It seems to work best with low-output, fairly "soft" sounding pickups (it currently has Duncan Alnico IIs). So I'm thinking Stormy Mondays.

How about MQ's? Those will provide fatness and singlecoil-vibe at the same time.

i play in a post-hardcore band. something along the lines of thursday, i guess, and i play through a sunn model t ri and/or a jcm800 clone-thing. i still need something thatll handle dirt and not mush out. i fear that soft sounding pickups will lose their definition under gain. i like the idea of MQ's but i think my p90'd sg kinda covers that ground well enough.

OK, forget the SMs!

I wonder how something like a alnico warpig would do in that guitar...certainly would not mush out and has fat cleans too...

i already have an alnico warpig in my les paul. thats hotter than i want to go with this one.

Maybe a VHII, they seem to do well in bolts-on.
