Yep, the band I've been in for the past 2 years is officially dead as of today.
The singer/songwriter was getting a little f*cked off with the drummer for letting us down with rehearsals (and even a decent gig at Chinnerys in Southend tonight) that he's pulled the plug on the whole project.
Shame, really - we were a pretty good band, had some good tunes, and were pretty tight live.
I wonder what the next marvellous musical project the future has in store for me? Maybe something a little heavier - still fancy being in a Sabbath tribute band...
-
:( That's a shame.
Sounds like it wasn't a complete bolt out of the blue, and you seem to be viewing it with a certain amount of pragmatism.
Can you play Iron Man, Fairies Wear Boots, Snowblind, etc, on a tele? Actually, what am I talking about? I already know they can be played on a tele! Finding an Ozzy might be hard work though... (and a Geezer, for that matter).
Good luck with whatever it is.
-
I agree, good ol Geezer, damn good bassist that guy.
To find a good bassist and drummer is a rare catch for me nowadays.
And the drummer makes all the difference between your band sounding dull and uninspiring or mega sh1t hot.

Yep, I've owned Black Sabbath albums for 30-odd years, but I've only noticed this recently when I bought a short-scale bass. I was playing Jack Bruce stuff, and Andy Fraser from Free, but there was this other stuff coming out that sounded familiar... REAL familiar. It took me a couple of days to figure out that it was Black Sabbath basslines. So I got some CDs out and listened to the bottom end - wow! He's doing some superb stuff under there - another overlooked hero in an iconic band, eclipsed by the hoo-ha around the guitarist/vocalist (a bit like Andy Fraser in Free).
Anyway, Mr Bump - feeling better or worse the day after? (I saw your sad and lonely post in "What are we listening to" last night, couldn't think of anything sensible to say, but my heart went out to you...)
Don't get too down about it, for too long, you don't need to... Finding other musicians is a pain, but from the Fallen Poets tracks I've heard you've already got an advantage a lot of other guitarists haven't - you are an "ensemble guitarist", you seem to know instinctively how to fit in with the song/track/band. (Mebbe you don't think it's "instinctive", and you had to put in a lot of effort to get that effect, but the effect's still the same)
We guitarists all tend to go on about the bassist/drummer/singer/keyboard-player not being up to scratch or overplaying their role or whatever... But they all get just as wound up by guitarists and their idiosyncracies. Meeting a guitarist who can play or work at what's needed and instinctively fit in and complement/supplement the band is often a pleasant surprise for non-guitarists!
From what I've heard, I reckon you've got "it" in this department. So, although it won't be easy finding another lot, you're bringing the "seeds of success" with you when you do... And I kind of suspect that your attitude rubs off on the other players whether you know it or not... :D

I saw that, but didn't realise the significance until now!
Sorry to hear this news. Any scope to start a new project from the ashes of Fallen Poets? They must all be at a loose end now as well....
-
Andy, you're a gent - but what are you doing up at 4 in the morning???
Yep, I'm being very pragmatic about it. It means that I get some time back for family, wing chun, focusing a bit more on me. Also, I can PRACTICE some morer! It's amazing how being in a band can make you forget that you actually still need to practice!
Regarding the tele/Sabbath thing... I reckon that my Yam SG with Mules is pretty good for that sort of stuff, particularly with a muff style fuzz. But I'm really tempted by those SG Special 60's thingies that Gibson has released - I reckon they look ace.
Also - my wife bought me some singing lessons for my 40th birthday last month! That might open some opportunities for me! Really excited about it!!!
Mark.

i'm sorry to hear the band has split up. all the best with your next project though!!
bands are difficult i know, though am considering starting one up at the moment actually. we'd be needing a bass player, and i don't have any immediate bass playing buddies, which doesn't inspire me to push on with the idea. hoping to meet someone dedicated randomly.
-
So - just been browsing JoinMyBand, and lo and behold; an ad seeking a guitarist and drummer for Fallen Poets! The band hasn't split up, me and the drummer have been fired!!!
Awesome!
:?
Bunch of c0cks. Me and the drummer were the only musicans in the band!!!
Honestly. Some people.

It's the old Status Quo / Alan Lancaster scenario. Except you didn't move to Australia.
Seriously though, that is pretty sh!tty of them.
-
Bloody right. And I'm now irrationally upset by it - even though I was likely to leave anyway...
Grrrr!
-
underhand and deceitful. clearly ball free men. you're better off without them.
-
The f@ckers!
So what's he hung on to? Just the bassist? Or is it possible he's found a different bassist and he's just using the name and his material to start again?
I could kind of understand the last scenario, but I would like to think that I'd let everyone know that I was ditching the whole set up and starting again...
Really sorry to hear this, not what you need at all :(
Total @rse.
-
Yeah - it's weird, it's made me more angry than it should.
Me and the drummer - in all modesty, we were the musicians in the band.
I think that he's kept the bass player. The thing is, if he'd called and said that he wanted me out I would have been shocked, but it would have been fine. Pretending to ditch the whole project? That sucks!!!
C'est l'vie. I'm sure that there will be more interesting stuff coming on down the line.
-
Saw Fallen Poets on utube. The guy playin the Tele were't too bad had potential. As for the rest of the band ?
You deserve better and can do better than that. Perhaps you and that drummer should get together and form your own kick ass band.
EDIT: A friend of mine although not a BKP member has made a good suggestion, if you manage to get the drummer back in with yourself, it may be a possible to swing the bassist back in your direction.
That would leave that stupid singer in the lurch.
-
That was a scummy way to change a band line up but sadly reminded me of a similar situation that I was involved in many years ago. I was in a band where it was decided the keyboard player was no longer up to the job.I suggested we come out with it and explain to him and he would probably quit but another band member, who was ( and still is) his best mate suggested that rather than hurt his feelings, we all say that the band is splitting and we re form some while later without him but with a new keyboard player( who happened to be my son). I said that this was not a good idea but I was persuaded to go along with it. The ruse was seen through and it ended up that I was blamed but the guy and he never really forgave me. I see him socially on occasions and he is very cold and abrupt to me and yet his mate, who hatched the plot, was not blamed for one moment. I still feel bad about it because he obviously thinks I am a sneaky gutless scumbag. For the sake of their friendship, I have never spoken out about it.

Some very strong and commendable values there - not sure if I would handle it with good grace though!
When my first (and only proper) band split up it was an email from the singer with a massive ego. Basically it said "we decided to break it up as we weren't being serious enough about it". This can be translated as "I want you out of the band as you have said that you aren't willing to give up every Saturday for a 5 hour rehearsal". Shortly after this our bass player tried to find a compromise as he knew I was good for the band (solid player, nothing flashy and that's what our music needed). He organised a "free" session for me to go and try a new studio out. What he hadn't told me was that he had also invited the singer and that he had kept us both in the dark about the others appearances. The singer bought along a guitarist who wanted to be louder than everyone else. The session went ahead but was total sh!t - I agreed to play a few songs but was very miffed when this new guy had restructured the songs that I had put a lot of time and effort into and had written loads of w@nky guitar solos into places where they just did not fit. He also had a faulty valvetronix with an inordinate amount of hiss, this didn't help the situation at all.
The only satisfaction I had is that we were pretty decent for a while, had some regular gigs and then when I left the band and singer disappeared from the local music scene. He is still looking for a guitarist and has asked me back a few times.

Not sure if I would be so nice :P

Thanks but I am no angel. I just thought that enough damage had been done- no need to add to it.

Live like an angel, die like a devil.
Got a place in hell reserved for me.
Live like an angel, die like a devil.
Gonna burn in hell that's where I'm gonna be. (Lyrics by Venom).
Then walk up to him and kick him in the knackers, not a lot of damage, just a bit. :D
-
OK - so having avoided the singer for a while now, I just got a call from him desperate for me to rejoin the band.
Much apologising, much humble pie eaten.
We're going to go for a beer - all the original band - and have a good old chat about what happened, and if we can make it work again.
I hope we can. We were a pretty good band.
Mark.
-
Best of luck with it! Hope it works out how you want :)
-
Interesting development, very interesting...
If it looks like it really is all coming back together, make sure you (personally) know why you're doing it, what compromises you might or might not be making, how much you trust the other buggers, whether you need to, etc, etc...
In other words, try to make sure you know it's what you want and why.
Hope it works out well for you :D
-
happy to hear this news. a chance to push your ideas a little more?
-
Good luck Mark, hope it works out ok for you all. Personally I'm not sure if I'd "take him back" as I would worry about it happening all over again.
-
Yeah best wishes from me too. I think it important to make sure that the air is cleared and all niggles are taken care of before any commitments are made- speaking from experience anyway. It may even be the making of the band.
-
Definitely clearing the air - beer first, music later.
The things that frustrated him before will still be there...
We'll see. Don't want to be let down by them again. But my guard is up!
-
So!
I've been kicked out again. That's definitely it this time, not going back if asked.
Singer reckons that we're too different musically. I've taken that to mean that he's actually been advertising for another guitarist all this while, and he's now managed to find one.
-
I think you should definitely draw a line under it at this point!
Had much been happening between the end of August and now?
-
You're right, PQ...
Yeah, I've been meeting up with the singer at his house, going through new material.
Been going OK, but there have been a few flashpoints - I wanted to be a little more adventurous, get away from the middle of the road sound that we were settling into, but a little more dissonnance in there... He wanted to keep it a little more "polite". Also, he was keen on getting a keyboard player, which I didn't really like the idea of.
Shame - I thought we were better mates than that. But there you go.
Edit - Hmmm... apparently we weren't that good mates - he's just un-friended me on Facebook! Again!!!
-
Too bad, but in the end being away of such prick tend to be good... Perhaps you should try start a new band :)
-
Oh well- probably best to move on.
The other guitarist in my band has announced that he will be leaving in the new year. We are looking to replace him but I am going to miss him a lot as we worked well together.

Well, I'm at a loose end....
JOKE!
JOKE!!
Don't worry, just kidding! PDT_023

Unfriending people on facebook is not necessarily the end of the world - I do it to perfectly good friends who post too much - for example a professor of Arabic friend of mine who posted about 54 posts (in arabic) a day. It just clogged up my phone.
-
Just catching up on this.
Tis a shame... but...
I had a feeling it wouldn't work out second time, but I think you had to give it a go.
Still a real shame though. I hope you get something else sorted soon.
-
Cheers, Andy -- settled in to it now, not really that bothered any more. Of every logical level it's entirely his loss.
:D
