Title: ESP Eclipse II (distressed) vs LP
Post by: Bird on June 20, 2011, 03:31:36 PM
How does the ESP compare to an LP. None in stock around here, just looking for opinions. Thanks

It doesn't.  Not a bad guitar, in fact they are great.  Much thinner than an LP in sound and wood.  To me the ESP Viper is closer to an LP than the Eclipse in terms of sound, even though it looks similar to an SG.

Eclipse FTs are much closer, they are approximately the same thickness.

But in the end, nothing sounds like an LP but an LP.

I concur, the ESP is a different beast, though the bigger difference is in feel. If you swap pickups, they will sound closer to each other. The ESP sounds more compact and precise and I always found the neck to be quite fast in response and attack. Not telecaster level, but definitely faster than the Gibson logs.
That said, of course those "plus points" might be distinct "negative points" for some people.

I like the look of the ESPs, and the thinner body/lighter weight would be a definite selling point for me.

But ESP will insist on making all their guitars with that "Thin U" neck shape!  :x

Not quite true, the FT Eclipses actually have a quite Gibson-ish U neck.

Thin U :       20.2mm at 1st/22mm at 12th
Regular U :  21mm at 1st/23,5mm at 12th

This one isn't lighter, its about the same as my R8.

JH-3, Hetfield sig...that's probably as Les Paul as ESP gets, spec-wise

Thanks, I didn't realise that.  Still a little skinnier than I'd like, but an improvement for sure!

Bah, just when I'd learned there was a thicker neck option!  :x

Nice guitar, I like the pinstriping!

My ESP Eclipse 1 CTM Full Thickness. With some BKP Rebel Yell love.

I have never played Les Paul Custom before, but personally I'm happy with my Eclipse ;)

Those covers look absolutely awesome in that guitar. They really set it off.

I've always been a fan of burnt chrome against solid black.

i currently have my set in a trans grey flame top RG and they look good but they look a lot more subtle than when against a solid black body

You probably won't be surprised, but that's not the first time I've heard that.

lets face it people gibson is sooooooooo  overrated if your lucky you can pick up a plain jane les paul for around 1900 bucks. and what do you get for that money a very cheap top that ive seen better wood grain on a 8 dollar piece of ply wood. step up to a AA or better top add at least another 1000 to that price. when in reality that nicer piece of wood maybe costs them 20 bucks if not less. guess who eats the rest of the mark up. they also think everybody wants a 59 style neck on their guitar, damn near 2" wide at the nut and almost as thick. at gibson the word option is not in their vocabulary what a different pick up not happening different color, tuners, or anything you might its  not happen. unless yout name happens to be page, lifeson.gibbons well then thats a different story they will do that for guitars gods but for the everyday joe you SOL. dont get me wrong i dont hate gibson guitars they make great guitars have a great sound i just happen to love my hard earned money a whole lot more. i would almost bet any thing in a BLIND test you take any gibson lp put it against a esp, prs, washburn with  the same pickup same scale same amp and out of 100 people maybe 5 could actually tell you which one is which. personally if i was gonna spend anything over 2200 bucks i would seriously look into a ed rowman guitar. and what do you get for that you get a CUSTOM guitar the color or paint job tuners of your choice every thing YOU  want in the same price range as a AA+ TOP LP.so you i dont have anything at to do with ed roman, the 2 thing i know about him is what ive read about his work, reviews and a friend of a friend i know owns one amazing guitar in looks and sound. in all reality there is basically 5 or 6 guitar shapes and 90% of all guitar are some type of copy, clone of a gibson les paul and a fender stratocaster. 1 other thing that plain lane plywood look top of that 1900 dollar lp is really only worth  800-900 dollars, when yo say the words gibson les paul add at least 1000 dollars just for those 3 words. all your doing is pay for a name thats it.all i am saying is unless its a image thing or you must absolutely have to have one then go for it, but before you lay down that kinda money do your self a favor go to your local music store and compare then do some research on line and see if they offer more options that you might want i.e color, pickups. tuners or whatever. just remember its like a new car once youve walked out the door with it youve already lost several hundreds dollars unless your lucky enough to get x amount of days full refund guarantee. good luck in what ever you decide....

if i had over 2200 bucks to spend on a guitar, the last place i'd go is Ed Roman.

I'd go for the FT Eclipse over a Gibson. Gibson's quality has taken a nose dive over the past few years and at the price they're asking for it's disgusting.

If I had the money I'd go for a Heritage. Built at the same factory by most of the same guys that built the Les Pauls people dream of owning.

I have a mid 90's les paul custom. for me it feels better, plays better, and sounds better than any other les paul i've tried out (gibson or otherwise). That said, i got it second hand for a really good price. to this day it's the cheapest legit LPC i've ever found.

That would be my take on it.
