Title: Varitone push/pull type mod
Post by: Jazz Rock on June 26, 2011, 12:31:22 AM
I have now gutted the Epiphone completely and did another test with the bridge pup directly connected to the jack. At least I could hear the beautiful sound of the MQ with what I would consider as expected level of hum, which is peanut really. I have also taken advantage of this complete gutting to shield the cavity, I gues it can only help with single coils.

Now, I didn't really have the opportunity to play much with the Epi and the MQs during this mad experience of tracking the hum, but it was long enough to realise that I probably won't have much use for a kill switch. It is just not the kind of trick I enjoy playing with. Therefore, as I'd still quite like to find a use for the second push/pull pot, I was wondering if there was not something that could be done along the line of BB King's varitone mod. I have a few caps and resistors lying around, and I am wondering if they couldn't be used to make a treble boost, fat switch or dark mode. Anybody been toying with this kind of mod before?

I'll do a some research on the web in the meanwhile and will let you know if I find something.

there are many ways you can do tone preset switches with various configuration of caps

a popular one is the c--ked wah tone, this can be wired on a push pull like this

those values will give you the c--ked wah, but the general idea can be used with trial and error and different values and configurations to find various presets.  you could wire it with a specific preset from a varitone
something liek this without the rotary switch and only one of the caps

the other easier option is a simple cap selector to select between two values (or 3 if you have a on-on-on switch).  its only worth it if you actually use the tone pot a lot

Hey WezV, I quite like the idea of the wah sound, unfortunately, the picture is not displaying. Would you be able to point towards another reference?

changed it to a different version, the one in my photobucket doesnt want to link properly :?

you will have to do it differently on the epi assuming its dual hums with own volume & tone, but there should be a way

Thanks Wez,

I have 68m, 100m and 203m caps lying around, so I will use the first 2 values. Only have 220k and 130k resistors though. I think I'll give it a try tonight with resistor, as 3k is quite a low resistance (i.e. closer to 0 than 130k) and see how it goes.
