Why do so many metalheads, particularly those who like the more extreme styles of metal, hate metalcore in particular? I personally like a lot of it. There is definitely a lot of horrible metalcore out there and a lot of it sounds the same, but you could say the same thing about any other subgenre of metal. My least favorite subgenre of metal is Black Metal or any other Scandinavian Metal music similar or related to black metal. I also dislike doom metal, power metal, and really hate symphonic metal. However, there are definitely good songs in those subgenres, but in general they are shite to my ears.
Some of my favorite metalcore songs include:
Six-All That Remains
Two Weeks-All That Remains (Fantastic guitar solo IMO)
This Calling-All That Remains
Unholy Confessions-Avenged Sevenfold
Rose of Sharyn-Killswitch Engage (This is the only song I like by KSE)
Anyways, I wanna hear from all you metalcore haters and understand what you guys think.
-
Not sure what the point of this thread is, certainly not when posted on this forum. Certainly not sure why you bother to ask why people dislike a genre then deride a bunch others?
Metalcore like Earth Crisis, Integrity, Converge and so on I've a lot of time for. Metalcore as it became later with a bunch of guys playing sanitised At The Gates covers I've far less time for.
-
Different tastes in music.
Some people likes metalcore, others avantgarde acapella.
I like a few metalcore bands. I like some of Bury your dead's tracks. I like some of kse's too. but in general mallcore just bores me.
If you would call converge metalcore, then one of my fav bands are a metalcore band :P
-
Well, first of all it's no secret that metalheads are usually curmudgeons. Anything "the kids" like, they will dislike, and that is just how it is.
Nevertheless, while I do feel that attitude has no justification when it comes to hating undeniably talented pop musicians like Lady Gaga or Justin Timberlake simply for the fact that they are popular, I do feel it has quite a bit of justification when it comes to "Metalcore."
I for one really do like Killswitch Engage. They are a genuinely good band with kickass songwriting, and I'm pretty sure even the most diehard of haters will agree that they have a good load of merit to them. The issue is in reality, the clones. KsE are good, so that meant a whole legion of copycats came out of nowhere and starting clogging everything up. And as it usually is with copycats, the whole bloody lot of 'em were/are complete shite. Hence the hate.
-
Because everything music related with the term -core in it, is shite as far as i'm concerned.
I know the bands try to make music, but to my ears it's utter cr@p. I don't like the song structures, i HATE the breakdown after breakdown after breakdown and i sure as hell don't like the screaming.. or the shoehorned melodic parts.. there's NOTHING about it that i find pleasing.

Why Hate Metalcore?
Why Not?

Man stuff like this is dumb. I personally have an aversion to most things with 'metal' in the title.
I don't think of Earth Crisis, Integ, or Converge as metalcore. They defo have a metal influence, but metalcore to me is an umbrella term for stuff I don't like. When things stop being hardcore. I mean, Leeway & Cro-Mags have a metal influence but I wouldn't call them metalcore. The stuff I'm not into is what sounds like watered down mid 90's hardcore, lacking all urgency just another sound that rock bands play. There isn't anything exciting about it. Now take some Bulldoze, Shattered Realm, NJ Bloodline, Mushmouth/Out To Win, Fury Of Five, Morning Again, Damnation AD, Indecision, Two By Four, Stigmata, Merauder, Irate, Red Eyed Devil... if you call that metalcore then I guess I like a bit of it but I don't like any of the bands mentioned at the top.
-
Well, I keep checking this thread, because it's bound to be entertaining...
... but I have not the slightest clue what you chaps is talking about
Over the weekend, I finally got round to finding out what Grand Funk Railroad were about in the early 70s - and I was very pleasantly surprised. Even in the early 80s people were telling me they were stodgy cr@p... It's taken me 30 years to get round to giving them a go.
I kind of regret not listening to them years earlier, but on the other hand, I wouldn't have had that "oh wow!" feeling of discovery this weekend. I'm, er, guessing that Grand Funk Railroad are not exactly metalcore maybe?
Anyway, I stand firmly in the "I do not hate metalcore" camp (wotever the f*** it might be!). I don't hate any sort of music. There's a bunch I don't want to listen to, yeah, but I can't say I've ever heard any music that I've hated.
-
I'm sure there was a thread on here once of people going on about how ALL hip hop is rubbish. Same old story, a bunch of people winge and come out with really opinionated responses, and then someone posts a clear reasonable view which is basically 'each to their own', everyone agrees and that is the end of it.

I'm not familiar with very much of their stuff, but I always thought the problem with what I have heard (many years ago) was lack of consistency - a couple of great tracks per album, but a big load of filler. Then again, that was pretty common in the '70s, when bands made an album a year (maybe even two) - you'd expect a few duff songs.
Could we BE any more off-topic?

Not even..... I dunno, Shabba Ranks? :?

what's wrong with shabba ranks?

I was just thinking that as well...
(Mind you, I'll have to find out what a "shabba ranks" might be before I reply in too much depth )

Gloria Estefan. Can't stand "The Rhythm is Gonna Get You".

Ringworm is so cool :D Long time since i last heard them.
-
what's wrong with shabba ranks?
Unless you're talking rhyming slang...
...I just bloody hate that "Mr Loverman" song. The tune, the lyrics, the arrangement, his voice.... it just bugs me, it makes me furious every time I hear it. And - while I'm on the subject - I always associate it with "Boombastic" by Shaggy. The two of them come across as such preening macho tossers.
[/irrational rant]
-
I'm also convinced the reason this genre (Deathcore included) gets so much flak, is because it's brought back something we thought we'd gotten blissfully rid of when Glam Metal died:
Teenage Girls.
Let's face it, a lot of bands then, and now earn extra publicity points for having an attractive frontman. Would Bring Me The Horizon have gotten anywhere if they didn't have Oli "Fething teen Heartthrob" Sykes on vocals? Would Poison ever have hit it big if they didn't tart themselves up to make mid-80s High School girls all hot'n'bothered?
Not bloody likely, I say...
Of course, that makes all us basement-dwelling, beta-male troglodytes who couldn't even get laid in a "Omega Man"-type scenario very jealous. Hence the hate.
-
Now this is some extremely good metalcore imo:

If you can find the Live 1971 album that version of Inside Looking Out makes all the filler worth it. 8)

... What's Metalcore..?
-
That's the problem with many of these terms, they're really a press contrivance to allow them to nicely pigeonhole bands. They're also not especially consistent, bands like KSE and Shadow's Fall are a world away from many of the bands who are now described as metalcore.
The problem with all genre rock is the fact that the record companies all jump on bandwagons and sign up any old tat because "it's what the kids like". This is why the best examples often end up transcending the genre that spawned them. It's not a new phenomenon, look at all the awful formulaic hair metal bands, grunge bands, britpop bands, nu-metal bands etc etc who'd never have been signed if it hadn't been flavour of the week.

Very true.
-
I dont even know what is considered metal core anymore
I quite enjoy killswitch engage but havent listened to an entire album just the odd track here and there.
I did like shadows fall.
But nowadays everything some tells me is "****"core and send me a track its utter shite with a load of screaming and mindless riffs such as job for a cowboy which a friend conned me into going to see...... i should have checked them out first as it was a horribly painful gig that just sounded like one 20 second breakdown repeated constantly for about an hour and apparently that was metalcore...
-
Job for a Cowboy certainly aren't a metalcore band, though metalcore des mean something quite different now than when it began, much like emo, or indeed R 'n'B.
-
Perhaps the question should be:
"Why Hate Metalcore, when there are so very many other things worthy of your hard-earned hatred?"
Like the Beatles, Mashed Potato, Parking Wardens, Telecasters and Middle lane drivers.
BURN THEM ALL!
-
Potato hating freak.
-
Seriously? Mashed potato too???
I used to think it was funny. Now I just pity you.

What's wrong with potatoes :S

I used to be a potato farmer, I like the Beatles and I have a telecaster.
I presume you want to burn me :)

Fair enough I can understand everything else as a subjective taste thing or stereotypical tw@ts, but mashed potato!
wtf were you subjected to as a child, when done properly it's truly magnificent

Roo I'm with you on mash potato, it's too high on the glycemic index but cake is the most evil food there is. Insane calorie density and lack of nutrients; especially today as I was in the supermarket before I had my dinner and the cakes were calling to me.
"Old" metalcore on the other hand is just an American take on Scandinavian melodic deathmetal but with singers that I can't stand and bands being signed too fast before they mature properly. Although I do rather like a bit of Parkway Drive and the last Unearth album (their first one was pants hence signed before matured.)
-

I agree.... unfortunately cake is also the nicest food there is. But I can't eat it any more.

Is there any reason why the glycemic index should concern the average potato fan? It could be high on the arsenic index and I'd still gobble it up. And then calorie chat!
Away to your Men's Health.
-
Not really as the glycemic index is flawed as most people eat a range of foods together but then one can hypothesise that the less processed form of potato would be more filling and so decrease chances of over eating. But then a counter argument could be protested as it is unknown to me if drinking water with mash potato would mix in the stomach, there by trapping water in the stomach much like thick soup does and so make one feel fuller.
Men's Health is highly flaws too but I plan to age like a fine wine by stuffing my face with foods rich in antioxidants, red wine being a source of antioxidants :D

Drive in the middle once, just once, and you're cinders

Everybody Loves Mashed Potato!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzHlDxyO8SI
But not everybody loves Metalcore.
Personally I don't mind the guitar, it's tight and rhythmical and often pretty impressive. But from the stuff I've heard the drums and vocals put me offl. I guess I'm just not wired that way.
What would metalcore guitar be with sparser drums and clean vocals?
You know like if Ringo was playing the drums and John and Paul were singing?
-
I don't really like metalcore much. The only band in that genre I am into is Every Time I Die, who I happen to be into quite a lot! They're not quite so typically dull as they have heavy southern rock influences so their riffs have big swinging bollocks
Buffalo Gals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOx_iSEjITc)
Pigs Is Pigs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6OXX2vcaZU)

That's definitely moving in the right direction. I like the first song best.

Have a listen to their "The Big Dirty" album, it's pretty good and has some less metally ones such as Rendez-Voodoo and INRihab.

No bother for the average potato fan, but it is an issue if you're diabetic.
As for calories, they no longer concern me. Can't get enough of the bloody things....literally.

I used to really like going to Pizza Express, too. Now I have to have salad. :(
Although to some extent, if you go for plenty of fat/protein in the toppings it reduces the effect of the carbs in the pizza base. Allegedly. One day when I'm feeling brave I'll just say $% it and have a pizza.... but I'm not there yet. Still getting used to this diabetes shite. :|

mashed potato should rule the earth.
and that is all I have to say (in the words of Ten Bears)
-
So - real mashed potato, or Smash..?
-
That's not even a question.
-
Real of course, but smash or mr mash was fine when I was a student.
-
gunna stick to my cous cous
-
Real Mash Potato all the way.
That instant stuff is god awful
-
So - real mashed potato, or Smash..?
Smash is not mash, not in my world.
Its got to be real potato, milk, butter (lots), seasoning (a bit nutmeg is nice). I'm a bit of a food ponce, but there you go
-
I make potato gratin far more than I make mash, and have plain ol' boiled potatoes more than either. But there is no form in which a potato isn't a delicacy.
Except potato salad, because mayonnaise is the devil.
-
So, we're now into mashcore.. :)
-
mayonnaise is the devil.
:O i have to disagree there. Mayonnaise is great if used right and in moderation.
However potato salad is disgusting
-
So, we're now into mashcore.. :)
Far better than crabcore :D

Anything is better than crabcore.
Any voices of dissent on that one?
-
Anyone who's into crabcore should go to the doctors and get it check!
Mayones Mayonnaise isn't evil, yes it's high in calories and fat but it's vegetable fat ie the good ones, although first time I noticed it was 722 Calories per 100 grams I was a bit shocked
-
It's nutritional value is irrelevant. It just tastes like hell.
-
You're not suppose to eat it on its own

Ehhh...
Eat shit by itself or eat shit as a condiment it's still gonna taste rubbish...
