Title: NRRD - new rehearsal rig day! (Bargain alert!)
Post by: Twinfan on July 05, 2011, 06:24:24 PM
Yep, Twinfan has bought something  :lol:

I was getting sick of lugging my chunky 2x12 to and from our rehearsal rooms, so when shobet's pair of Marshall 1922s came up for sale I couldn't resist.  I'm happy to leave them there in our storage box and I don't need to bring them home for gigs.  Result.

I was then thinking of grabbing another Tiny Terror or other lunchbox amp to save carting my XTC Classic around too, and during a casual browse of eBay yesterday I came across the distributor of Jet City amps selling their JCA20H heads (with slightly damaged cardboard boxes) for £165 brand new!  Gotta be worth a punt, so one arrived today.

I've got to say, for £324.99 all-in this is a great little rig for rehearsals.  The JCA20H is a very, very nice little amp and an absolute steal for the money I paid.  The Bonamassa Signature Fuzz is more expensive for heavens sake  :o  The pedalboard on the floor is my small one and is actually worth more than the stack!  :lol:

I'm looking forward to cranking this little lot up a bit, but at home volumes I'm well impressed!

I missed out on the Jet City Picovalve (THD knockoff) they had listed.

Some nice familiar pedals there, Dave.

They had a few Wez, and the master volume is really good.  It's a top product.

Just realised it came with a Euro kettle lead though, mine seems to be a Dutch badged one  :lol:  Power supply is the same as the UK though, so job's a good 'un.

i think i looked at it a few times last week and went through the other stuff they had in damaged boxes going really cheap.  i really want to build my next amp though so i talked myself out of it

yeah someone on another forum mentioned those deals. Excellent value if you need (!) an amp... was slightly tempted myself but i've managed to hold off so far... what's putting me off is i'd probably want the 100 watter the most and it's enough dearer not to be in impulse buy territory...

nice score. the 20 watter is very small and cute :D

It sounds great Dave - the preamp is very good.  Proper Marshall-y.  At these prices amps handwired by Columbian virgins can take a running jump, this thing is punching well above it's weight!

(No offence meant to any Columbian virgins out there...)

the preamp in this is the old Atomic 16 preamp I believe. Discontinued Soldano amp. Might be some differences. those jet citys look like crazy bang for buck

they have some of the 100w heads for sale too, about £375 I recall - I'll be all over them if there are any left next pay day.

I've got it set with the gain at 4/9 at the minute, and it's a great crunch tone.  Boosted with my Klone it just sings!  Very nice indeed.

Stupid bargain of my playing career this is!

Nice rig!  Of course I know nothing about Jet City amps, how does it compare to something like the Tiny Terror?

I know, was just rubbing it in a bit - couldn't resist.

He's running it with a 6550, says its badass.

Nice rig!  Of course I know nothing about Jet City amps, how does it compare to something like the Tiny Terror?

From what I can remember of my old TT, it's less flabby and fuzzy.  Plus with the full BMT tonestack and a Presence control you can dial it in a bit more to your liking...

Hopefully, he'll buy so many power tubes to try in it, he'll need to sell :)

I cant compare to the TT but all of the Jet city range are soldano designs with a few changes and made on one huge pcb  with the preamp valves mounted on the PCB (from pics i've seen)  by chinese children.. but that doesnt affect tone

Oh there are also a few THD designs too

Cool "little" rig (2x2x12" is not actually so small).

Now send the JCA20H to Dave Friedman for the Browneye mod: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32IwFSy493A

yeah they definitely have a good rep on the forums- just never been able to try one myself. EDIT: thanks for the info on the preamp tone, that's useful for my home playing, lol :D

As Dmoney says, I think it was supposed to be based on the atomic 16, and i think it was meant to be a bit lower in gain? Only soldano i've tried was the avenger, and it was awesome, which is why i'd probably be more interested in the 100 watter (or the 50, but they don't seem to have them on sale).

though the 20 watter is smaller (running out of room :lol: ) and a lot cheaper...

Also the picovalve looks interesting... though again i preferred the thd flexi to the bivalve i tried, and as far as i know the picovalve is closer to the univalve/bivalve type of design. :lol:

dang it jet city, just give me an slo for like £150, ok? :lol:

I see the McCarty Korina's going too!

I wish I'd never bought mine, that's twice you've sold nice ones I could've had at bargain prices!  :lol:

Ha ha!  Sorry Phil!

I've really, really narrowed down what I like in electric guitars and have been gradually selling off the ones that don't "fit".  If Francine goes today, I'll be down to 6.  I could be down to a single handful soon when the McKorina goes too...

* PRS Modern Eagle
* Paul Richardson SGR
* Fender Custom Shop Esquire
* Fender Custom Shop Tele
* JV Squier Strat

Five guitars!  Unbelievable.  :D

I've been thinking I'm overdue for a clearout (how many times have I said that?).  Bought and sold lot of guitars in the last year or so, some good, some bad (and not just the cheap ones), most average.  I'm getting GAS and giving in to it too easily.  :?

I'd like to properly clear the decks, shift loads out and get one or two really good ones in.

But it's so difficult!  eBay is depressing right now, the prices you get for sales are laughable once you deduct the selling fees.  It might almost be better to part-exchange, which I've never done in the past.

I'd just do it Philly - if you're buying used as an upgrade, those prices are deflated too.  it;s like car buying, it's all about the price to change!

Well, I'm still thinking new (that's "new" as in relic or VOS, mostly!).

Buying in shops is still preferable because at least you get to try the thing, or maybe even a few of the same model, rather than taking a punt on mail order or eBay (which is how I make all my "mistakes", ultimately).    That's why I'm contemplating the grim world of P/X.....  :?

I'm down to one guitar! Would love to have 5.

Buying in shops is really the only way I buy guitars nowadays, I have bought a few from ebay and the results have been hit and miss (more miss than hit though).

P/X is good if you can find the right guitar and get a good proce for what you want to trade in. Dave and I had a reasonably complicated P/X once that involved a few guitars - I can't even remember what guitars were involved (apart from me getting a CS Strat)

That was with Guitars4you wasn't it?  I know Dave has traded things in there more than once.  Mark seems to be more generous with P/X than other dealers (or maybe I'm underestimating other dealers).

The few times I've enquired about P/X in the past, it's always been much worse than what I could get on eBay, but I don't know if that's true any more (unless savvy dealers have also lowered their P/X allowances).

I feel like going to Guitar Village, trying everything in the store and then saying "I haven't got any cash, but I've got these 6 or 7 guitars, what'll you give me for them?".

The deal me and Ian did involved me trading in a PRS McCarty against a CS Strat, and me getting Ian's CS Esquire.

Mark is fair with trade-ins - I've only ever traded in with him and Sounds Great who were OK.  You'll never get deal of the century though!

if you're willing to wait, you can always get shops to sell on consignment/commission... some shops only charge 10%, which is probably less than ebay fees now. Fewer passing customers, but those who do pass are normally less savvy about the going rate of things... :lol:

Post by: Philly Q on July 07, 2011, 05:58:40 PM
Yeah, that's not a bad idea - 10% would be equal to eBay charges, roughly, but they might be able to get a higher price than an eBay auction, even if it took a bit longer.

yeah. you have none of the bother of parcelling the thing up, plus you have none of the ebay bother if something goes wrong, they have to go back to the shop, which they'll be less likely to do if they're chancing their arm (and even if something has gone wrong, they'll be dealing with the shop and not you).

main reason i did it though was because there was no way i could post an amp, i didn't have the original box or anything any more. :lol:

EDIT: the only thing with selling in a shop, though, is that people will probably try to haggle... so you set your price slightly higher than you'd be willing to take in a worst case scenario.

I have got a good memory though.  :)
