Title: Trilogy or irish Tour?
Post by: The Sorbz on July 08, 2011, 06:40:31 PM
Hi guys!

Just a quick question for you. I have just built anoter Alder bodied Warmoth Strat with Maple neck and need a set of pickups. My style for this guitar ranges from Hendrix/SRV to YJM, Eric Gales - ie the distorted but clear modern blues rock. However I would still like to have quack and cleanish warmth ala RHCP and the like. Waddya think?

I don't want to buy a set of pickups and find they cannot drive the amp enough. I use many different amps .. marshall, mesa, bogner and have loads of effects but want to be able to push the amp into juicy OD without effects if need be. Will the Trilogy set be too harsh on clean or will the IT set not be powerful enough?

Cheers,
Jim

Hi,

owning both, and having heard the neck pickup of both sets in the same guitar, I can provide some info.

For SRV and Hendrix, Irish tour would be pretty obvious. It's gritty and pretty bright (depending on the guitar).  You won't be able to make them muddy.

Trilogy suite..I wouldn't call them harsh (consider that I have only the neck pickup though). It's darker than the Irish tour, with a thicker and much more modern tone, more mids and output. You mentioned YJM, his Dimarzio pickups at least were pretty low output and on the warm side of tone. That DOD pedal really is a big part of this signal chain.

In your particular case, I'd probably choose the Irish tours. But have a listen to the clips section. They present the differences pretty well!

Btw, you could also consider the slow hands, for a thicker blues tone. Actually, I might just go for those :)

I have the IT's in my HSS-strat (swampash) and the neckpickup is stellar, for tones a la Hendrix/SRV. Although the bridge has some more balls to drive the amp (in my guitar I have a Crawler, so this is what I read in threads), they're not really pu's that will hammer your amp, although they handle gain (and pedals) very well. Unless, you use a booster in front, or a good overdrivepedal. The TS sound more modern, maybe a tad to contemporary for what your after, bec I guess your looking for some woodiness in the neckpickup. The Slowhands are the hottest in the vintage vibe-range. They do have more mids then IT's. Could be the pu for you.

Hi Jim,

I can say that the IT's clean through the bogner will be amazing, but i'm not sure whether they'd have the power you're after for the dirty sounds, i used to chuck a MXR GT-OD in front of the bogner for more push

all the best
