Title: Need help/advices for Blue Note/Nantucket/Supermassive/Pig 90
Post by: Sait on July 18, 2011, 11:20:58 AM
Dear BKP lovers,

I heard nothing but good reviews about BKP products. So I am here.

Just moved from Strat to SG with P90s, found the stocks to be muddy, boomy, woody and uncontrollable. Changed the pots and caps (550+, 0.22 Spragues) and purchased a Blue Note (which is on the way) just by reading the homepage of BKP website, aiming to have a smooth balanced open, airy, stratty tones from the neck for mostly jazz, blues classic rock tones.

My chain includes a lot of FX (mostly boutique fuzzes and boutique muff clones) and amplifier is a Hiwatt custom 20.

I am not a metal/thrash guy and never had a hot pickup before but the interesting thing is many of my dream guitarists use hot pups and neither of them play metal which confuses me a lot. Frank Zappa, Al Di Meola are just two of them.

Having the BLUE NOTE at the neck for clean and classic tones and rythm work, looking forward to make my SG more versatile by adding a hotter pup at the bridge for a more agressive characteristics humbuckerish tones, besides leaning towards to SUPERMASSIVE unable to decide.

Would it be a good match for Blue Note or an overkill or will have volume/noise issues? Nantucket would be a much more wise choice? Or "hottest is the best and get a Pig 90" ?

Any comment/experience/help would really be appreciated and wishing to be a further enlightment for those who might have similar questions

P.S.: I sent these questions to BKP (to Mr. TIM) several times during last 2 weeks but did not get any reply from him/them since. I hope will get better success here.

I have no experience with the pickups you mention, but I think a Supermassive might work with the Blue Note. Matt Bellamy of Muse uses a Nailbomb bridge paired with a Mississippi Queen p90 which as a set i think is comparable output-wise to the Supermassive and Blue Note.

I have no idea how the two pickups will react combined. You might end up with a not so usable middle position.

If you wanna play it safe I think the Nantucket would be a good match and if you wanna play it super safe then go for a Blue Note bridge

Personally I think the Nantucket is a better match for the Blue Note. Both vintage sounding, but the Nantucket being raw and gritty, like the vintage P90's in Gibsons. The in between-sound will be balanced. The Supermassive has massive mids and bass, compared to the more open, less compressed Nantucket. Could be  a tad too dark/warm in an SG, unless you like that. Just my thoughts, I don't have these pu's.

All right, spoke with TIM through the phone and the bottom line for my question is:
SUPERMASSIVE will be a big jump after the BLUE NOTE at the neck.
Since the BLUE NOTE is a vintage pup SUPERMASSSIVE is being a modern voicing not really recommended however it's up to the user's taste who would like to switch between pickups and in-between those 2 different tones.
I guess I will stay a little bit conservative and will order NANTUCKET and will have my input once the pups installed.
I hope this conversation will be a nice guide for those who will be asking the same question for themselves.
Thanks once again for all inputs/comments/ideas.

Yes, very useful.  :D

I have a lot of P-90 guitars and I'm keen to try the Nantucket bridge, but for LP Specials I wasn't sure if I should try the Nantucket set or Nantucket bridge/Blue Note neck.

Yes, it's good to share experiences with the new P90-line.

I suppose it depends on what you want, for me personally I like a lower output neck pickup for playing clean passages, then flip to a hotter bridge pickup.

That exactly was my original imagination, but not brave enough, never had hot pup beforeH
How hot your bridge compared to neck? Used to use middle position where both pups active? May I replace the hot pickup characteristics with fuzzes and big muffs (cos I have a lot), or that is a different story and the output of the pup is not replaceable with anything else? Thanks

I so need to hear more about the P90s in general.

I also like the bridge hotter than the neck, since I like my bridge for powerchords with dirt and the neck for that clean overdriven singing leads. So I got a RY bridge and Mule neck and that works well for me, though I would like even more difference at times, mostly the mule being even cleaner (time to further tool with the height again)....then again, I have been called a madmen several times before.

Ohh my God Kiichi! Your bridge is twice as hot as your neck  :o... Can you easily switch between pups without no volume shock? Do you used to use the middle position? Isn't it a huge difference in the name of the outputs? Good to know about the existency of players who use pickups with giant output differences..

Don't pay too much attention to DC resistances!

If you look at the specs for the Abraxas, Crawler or Holydiver sets, the bridge model has twice the DC resistance of the neck - but they're not mismatched at all.  :D

Had a MQ neck and warpig bridge in my SG.  The middle position was superb..
P90s have a lot of bite and are able to hold their own nicely with hotter humbuckers..

my bridge humbucker is around 15k while my neck P90 (MQ) is 7k

as there is more energy in the string at the neck position, you'll find that a weaker neck pickup works fine.
