Title: Sheldon TT3
Post by: champman on January 17, 2006, 10:02:30 PM
Thinking of buying a Sheldon TT3, my question is can you get good valve tone at bedroom practice levels. I know its rated at 1-3 watts but some reviews say it is still VERY loud others say it will do cranked tone at low volumes.

I currently use a Fender Champ 12, 80's valve amp at home, if you run it cranked it rips the roof off the house hence the Sheldon idea.

Any advice most welcome.

i've not heard good things about sheldon. I'd go for a HotPlate or possibly another power attenuator if i was you. probs be cheaper aswell. it'll be hard to find a valve amp of any wattage that yu can crank to bedroom levels...

Champman,

At the risk of pimping Matamp again, take a look at the Minimat:

http://matamp.co.uk/minimat.htm

2 watts clean (about 5 or 6 distorted), built-in attenuator, sounds great at bedroom volumes. You can get one with a 1x12 cab for less than the Sheldon.

I also considered the TT3 for low volume purposes, but I just couldn't find out enough about it. It might be great, but ...

I'm sure JT has a Sheldon amp. Maybe he'll chime in?

:D Yep i own a Sheldon TT3 !

Trust me when i tell `ya you won`t be able to use it cranked in a bedroom situation becuase it will be heard half a mile away !!!
it is very loud when cranked infact its very loud even when it`s not cranked   :(

As for the sounds if you play Blues style stuff only or Jazz/Country it`s great it`s got a lovely full sound. It breaks up lovely for that "Fabulous Thunderbirds" Jimmy Vaughan type stuff, but if you want to "Metal" it out then this is not the amp for you. If you already own a Fender Champ if i remeber rightly it`s been awhile since i`ve heard one in the flesh, i think you`ll find it`s got more "Gain" on the champ than on the TT3.

i think the TT3 is abetter sounding amp than the Cornford Harlequin but it doesn`t have enough gain for my taste.........

Thanks for all the input, I live close to matamp so I'll take a ride over and check out the minimatt.

JT - If the Sheldon does not have enough gain for you does that mean its for sale???!

Its an 80's Champ 12 (Redknob), has the Torress overdrive mod fitted to it and is in as new condition. Has also had both channel inputd changed for switchcraft units (still have the originals). Revalved in December 05 and serviced and safety checked at the same time.
