Periphery

Maybe I've gotten out of touch with the "hip scene," but I just can't see how this is enjoyable.
I love Meshuggah and El Scar and quite a bit of djent, but this just seems uninspired.
Don't get it general?
-
I quite like it tbh. But then I get I like Asking Alexandria's Stand Up And Scream album. That's just Djent meets the devil lol
-
I'm a bit the opposite. I can't stand Meshuggah, I don't understand the hype behind them?
As for Periphery, I don't mind them. I'm just not a djenty guy
The most djenty band I listen to would probably be Gojira, which i really enjoy. Much more than meshuggah
-
i cant see the big deal about any of it.
but i find periphery a lot easier to listen to than messhuggah which is just a huge wall of noise really
-
Bores me to tears. So does lots of other music. I don't listen to it. Job done.

I don't see the comparison with Meshuggah. Very different bands and styles to my ears. I can very happily listen to Periphery, though it's a bit on the light side, and they don't seem to play that hard. I love listening to Meshuggah, and Gojira for that matter. Great local band in Oxford that's somewhere around the periphery mark is Taste My Eyes - brilliant live and they really need to update their myspace profile with some proper recordings!
Part of the success of Periphery (aside from their undeniable musical talent, whether you like the style or not), is the work they've put in marketting themselves. They've been very savvy about putting info/music/updates all over the interweb, which has really paid off for them, it would seem!

Sevenstring.org basically made them. Much the same with Animals As Leaders. It's quite amazing the impact a single website can have on a band if lots of folks pay attention to it. Sludgeswamp used to do it sometimes, Forever Doomed. too.

I've always liked Periphery, from the moment I heard them. I liked the older vocalists more than I liked Spencer until I went and saw them live, and suddenly it all clicked. I didn't like his recorded vocals, but he is SO much better live than on CD. And yes, he can hit every single high note live without digital assistance, the dude is about as great a vocalist as I've seen in my 18 years of going to live gigs. Obviously with the exception of a few like Seb Bach who blew me away and a couple of others, but he's right up there in the top 5 I think. Dan Tompkins from Tesseract is in the top 5 too.

i remember back when bulb only had a few videos on youtube. He had this track that smelled alot like technical grindcore, Zyglrox. MAN i loved it. But as time passed the music just got too.. Well.. Like it is now. And i cant stand it

No, I don't get it particularly. It's quite difficult to listen to. I don't mind that sometimes, in music I do like to hear the juxtaposition between dissonance and connosance (big words for a Saturday morning...), but some bands just seem to go for the latter. Maybe I'm just getting old and set in my ways.

The main problem i have is how overproduced it is.
Its all really small and stuck together sounding with no air and space in the mix.
And the drums are just too clutterred and OTT when added to the mix

Pfff.... I think it sounds at least 60% like Meshuggah.
It has some moments, but most of it just sounds like an overcomplicated Fear Factory album.

Is there anything else you gents don't get?
I know Bulb swings by the BKP forums, from time to time. I'd rather he not find this thread to be a Periphery "getting it" fight and more of a discussion about music that you can't quite figure out, in general.
I don't understand the appeal of Avenged Sevenfold, either.
-
I don't now if there's music I don't "get". There's lots that just doesn't click with me, or that I don't see the hype about though, of course.
I suppose there's music that I find it difficult to understand how anyone finds redeeming features in, right enough. Power metal. UB40. But I also understand that lots of people will find it difficult to see any positives in the music I make, or in bands I love like Sunn 0))) and Whitehouse.

That's the spirit.
I'm more baffled by what I once had high opinions of and how I've progressed.
Years ago, I thought Down and Crowbar were garbage and wouldn't bother listening to anything having to do with wizards or electric nouns. Nor, did I think I would like electronica (the techno sort), in any fashion.
When Nile's "Ithyphallic" came out, I hated the album. It took being trapped in a car, listening to it for 4 hours, to get it to click. There was too much happening to dissect and really dive into until I could predict it.

Totally different; but I don't get Jack White whatsoever...
The guy is the sloppiest player ever. His fans pull out the "he plays with soul" argument, but that is total BS. There's so many guitarists out there who play with 1000 times more "soul" than him and manage to not sound like a 10 year old into a 10 watt solid state.
Sorry for the complete off topic post

I rather like the sloppy players. It sounds confident and real, to me.
Thanks for the input, though- and you're right on topic.
