Wow. The Gibson LP Dimed clip sounds bloody amazing. Cheers to big steve for the link!
Anyone had any experience with these kits? I am seriously considering buying one (the £129 version) and making it. Are filter caps lethal even when building an amp? I dont think they'd have charge in but I'm no expert. I just think it'd be a fun thing to do, and so long as I take my time I could have a cool little practise amp.. Watcha think?!
Cheers!

Never built an amp from a kit, but you may have to spend some dume 'debugging' it once built.
If you are interested in home made amps try this http://home.cfl.rr.com/dbhammond/doug.htm

What do you mean debugging exactly?
Cheers

those kits look excellent- i might get one.
but you sai dyou were getting the £130 one- wot you gonna do about building the cabinet/shell to enclose all the electronics?? build it yourself???

Yeah most likely. Cant be THAT hard to do! Ok so it wont look as good as theirs but it will be a hell of a lot cheaper and shouldnt look too shite. I'd only use it at home anyway!
-
spose your right. what amp(s) have you got at the moment??
-

its a programmer term. in simple terms in means making it work because the chances are you will do something wrong the first time around.
buying one of these kits would be good if you treat the project as a learning experience rather than a replacement for your existing amp.
-
he has a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I think you should go for at least the basic enclosure dude :o
-
mmhmmmmmm
-
Yeah I'm not gonna use it as a replacement, I just think it'd be fun to do and it would make a good little practise amp when hooked up to a speaker.
However if I do buy the 5w one and it turns out good (after debugging etc) then I might actually consider buying and building the 18w version and getting rid of my HRDx.. that sounds very far-fetched at the minute though
-
i might buy the 5 watt and get my techno-wizz mate to help me build it, then just hook it up to this JVS separate amp with wharfedale speakers (which i usually connect my zoom ps-04 to when i dont have my amp) and it should pretty great lol!
and by the way connecting a modeller or something like that to a stereo amp has surprisingly good results- i dunno if anyone else has every tried it??? i bought the stuff i just described off my mate for £20 and now im considering selling my £180 crate it sounds that good.

I think the frequency response from hifi speakers is rather different to guitar amplifiers, so I'd recommend getting a proper guitar speaker - I think Maplins sell them cheap if you don't want to spend much.

Yeah thats what I thought.. So do you guys think I should order the kit? If so I can order it tomorrow then get solder on saturday! Just need opinions to see if you lot think its worth it really.. I did get all excited when I heard it and saw the price though

What?

lol dont matter dude- dont worry about it

If you have already learnt to solder & have a little building experience then do it, if for no other reason to say that is my amp I built it :)
However
If it's your first visit to self build I would suggest heading for something a little less ambitious especially as you will be working with more than 9 Volts
Perhaps getting a little practice project like a fuzz box first would give you a little practice before diving in.
I'm not trying to say you aren't up to building it but frustration has killed off more than one of my own personal projects in the past :(
Often with self builds you have (eventually) done everything properlyyou may still have to hunt problems down these could be faulty components, small design problems or just general wierdness.
Old habits die hard (from my coding days), debugging is the process of finding out what has went wrong when you think you have done everything properly.

Hmm yeah I could be diving in at the deep end. But this time as it comes with full instructions I think I could do it, so long as I take it slooooow and concentrate! I have done basic soldering (fixing wires in my guitar and replacing pickups) so I have the jist of it!
-
yer sorry my tongue/fingers went numb when i was typing that.....
-
Should I? Shouldnt I?! Come on  !
-
Yeah do it.
-
didnt look at the kit too hard but just do it. after all its just an amp.
Now if it was 2 channel, independant tone control, inbuilt spring reverb with effects loop...... thats different.
Have a go.
