Title: Painkiller or Aftermath for standard tuning?
Post by: witeter on August 07, 2011, 08:02:32 AM
Hi guys should i get a Painkiller or Aftermath set for my mahogany guitar? i know these pickups both do great in lower tunings and/or 7string guitars. I normally play in standard tuning or drop D though, but nothing else, so which would be best? should i look elsewhere? just worry about the Painkiller being too trebly for example-same for the Aftermath. I play through a Mesa Single and play Metallica, Opeth, InFlames, Nevermore, etc
Many thanks

I used to use the Aftermath in standard and in Eb and it really shined. More so than in lower tunings i would say

I use the aftermath in my drop D guitar and it sounds better (at least to my ears) than the painkiller.
But this can also be due to the fact that I prefer the aftermath over the painkiller anyway ;-)

The painkiller is not really suited for standard tunings. it first begins to shine when you tune 2 tones+ down.

so affermaff

no. I would reccomend you to remove your neck pickup. It suits no real purpose.

I think a couple of people on here have tried the prototypes.

But i think if you ask Tim will do a ceramic neck anyway

I have ceramic Aftermath neck in my koa Carvin.
It's awesome, great for everything, not muddy, clear and very musical.
I love it.

If you're referring to the ceramic Aftermath neck, it is glassier than the Painkiller neck, with more midrange. The Painkiller neck has a distinctly hollow, percussive character, almost like that of a single coil but with more power behind it.

Cheers Nolly! while im not keen of going for a painkiller bridge on a 6-string standard tuned guitar (worried about it being too trebly) would a painkiller neck however be ok in your experience?
