Just curious as to the different type of locking trems I could get for my guitar. Theres just so many like the Edge, Floyd, Schaller, ZR, etc. What do you prefer and why?

i like edge alot. its easy to set up and really, really stable

III lol :P its the only one of the edges i have. And its the most stable of the trems i own.

That's strange because I always here they put the Edge III on Ibanez's lower priced range. I've heard people say they wear out. But then again I've not played one so I don't know haha

The Ibanez Edge is my fav as well, once it is properly set up (which is a pain). I had the Pro Edge (not the low version).
I think locking tremolos are the best, because they are the most radical and consequent ones; they allow the most pronounced vibrato effect and have great tuning stability.

Original Floyd Rose. The Lo Pro Edge 7 trem was pretty good too.
After using the PRS trem though, I've gone off locking trems.

Edge 1 and gotoh. Stable, good setupability, well engineered, durable. If I had to pick one it would be the edge. I find both better than OFRs. Havent spent any real time with schallers, they could be better. Hororable mention for the ZR, since I wish I thought of it.
I should add that I dont actually use trems, ever. This is purely from experience as a tech.

Floyd rose pro. Comfortable, looks awesome and holds tuning to an almost unrealistic perfection.

OFR and Lo Pro II. However, the knife edge grinds down pretty quick on the Lo Pro; OFR lasts forever.

OFR and gotoh, out of what I've tried a fair bit (only tried things like the edge a little, but from what little i've tried them, they seemed pretty good, too).
If I could have some kind of hybrid of the gotoh and OFR (there are bits of each I think i prefer), that'd be awesome. :lol:

Don't use 'em (so ignore me) but I like the look of the ZR and the modified trems used by Vigier - because they don't use knife-edges and shouldn't wear out so quickly. Interesting designs.

I like my ZR. Great tuning stability and I like the feel I get from it in comparison to free floating trems (the ZR feels very direct and controlled to me), though that is a matter of taste, while the tuning stability is not.
Plus on my Ibbie s I can pull up the whole guitar easily by the trem arm....quite the fun move, you can see Herman Lee (Dragonforce guitarist, what ever you may think of them, they are an entertaining live band) do that live quite often.

Vigier trems have always interested me. Unfortunately I've not had a Vigier in my hands for years and even when I have I didn't check out the trem properly. A non locking trem that returns as it should on ball bearings with a lubricated nut? Sounds even better than the PRS trem

I haven't tried a ball bearing trem yet, but I will the moment I get the chance. They sound tempting.
Right now my fav trem is one they don't make anymore. It's a Kahler 2700 series "Killer." All hardened steel except for the fine tuner screws which are brass. Instead of the knife edge on the trem, it's on the posts which are really just heavy duty screws with a flat head. It's 50 cents to replace them at a local hardware store. Each saddle assembly can be adjusted for string width and string height without shims. You don't have to cut the ends off the strings or break out a hex wrench to loosen them(I modded mine so I do both though). Each string can be individually whammied up at least one tone if you tune up with the fine tuners set in the middle or higher. I can't help but love these Kahler fulcrums. I root for the underdog and the features are almost unbeatable.
This upcoming NAMM, Kahler is going to announce their new fulcrum trem finally. I've been hounding them for months about when, how much, can I buy a prototype if they aren't moving forward with it anymore, etc. Whammy J from Whammy World is a good guy I've dealt with a few times for trades and little parts and he said it has the option of either ball bearings OR a knife edge and the fine tuners are the smoothest thing he's ever used. He would not e-mail a pic. With the Floyd Patents gone or going, we're going to see a lot of great trems, but probably a lot of even cr@ppier units than we see now.

The Edge Pro is, by far, my favourite. It felt good, was easy to deal with, had proper hardware, and transferred tone well.
The ZR was a close second, due to stability and vibrato control.
I still prefer all Ibanez tremolos over a Floyd Rose, but the majority of them are made with cheap alloys.
I will always hate Kahlers and will never buy another locking tremolo guitar, as PRS and Parker have made them obsolete, in my mind.

People who like the Edge trems, why do you prefer them floyds?
I've played guitars with both but never focused on the trem.

They are easier to work with and, in some cases, have better tone.
To be truthful, unless you're willing to pay WAY too much money, you're better off with an OFR, as the cheaper Edge models are not made with the best components (hardware, alloys, and knife edges).
One of the bigger reasons, for me, was that they felt more comfortable to the touch. I always had the idea in my head that I was about to snag myself on the Floyds, but the Edges were more rounded and safe feeling (despite their name).
