They're superb. I would also look at the Brunetti Taxidrive, not cheap, but not a Klon-price either.

If the gain is set low enough, the Seymour Duncan SFX-01 Pickup Booster is quite phenomenal.
The SFX-03 Twin Tube Classic would be more versatile, as it works amazingly with low and high gain- without colouring the tone, too much.

I've always liked using EQ pedals to push the needed frequencies forward. There are some great tube pedals from Electro-Harmonix that feature a 3-band EQ. If you need more tweakability, the MXR KFK-1 has been discontinued, but it was amazing. The M108 is the next best shot, for the money.

Mine too!  But I am biased  ;)

I use a Maxon OD9, which is basically a Tubescreamer.
Love it, but it does color your tone. The MXR Zakk Wylde overdrive is pretty good as well and a bit more transparent.
For a simple clean boost, you could do worse than get the MXR Microamp.

theres been some good suggestions here. i chop and change depending on my mood at the guitar in question - thunder tomate treble booster, OD-1 and modded GE-7 are favourites this end

i'm tempted to suggest some sort of EQ pedal. it will give you that boost, and a nice range of control. its hard to try out these boxes in a shop and then you get them home and they work differently in your rig. i've always been able to tweak the settings on an EQ pedal and use it as a good booster whatever the situation.

If you're after just a boost then the Xotic EP booster is a great little pedal. If you want a little hair added then a Nick Greer Ghetto Stomp, Skreddy Screwdriver or a Fulltone OCD are worth a looksy.

My 6p worth.

My No.1 recommendation for a non-TS type pedal:

http://gundrymedia.typepad.com/throbak_electronics/2006/11/overdrive_boost.html

Does everything from totally transparent clean boost to full-on fuzz with very effective EQ knobs that take you from midbump to mid-scoop.
The most recent version also has a footswitchable 'pre-gain' control for effectively 2 different levels of boost.

Not cheap, but not as costly as some of the others mentioned here.

the EQ pedal idea is a good one - I use one in my rig to tweak the mids, so its on all the time.
