Title: Mental workout: Getting a Les Paul to sound a bit like A-pig'ed Swamp Ash Tele.
Post by: Loomer on August 17, 2011, 11:46:07 AM
Evenin' all.

I'm slowly gathering up some money to get myself back on the Les Paul wagon, for a variety of reasons.
The guitars I'm using for my band (see thread "Loomer's Hellmusic" for reference) are a swamp ash-bodied "bintage" telecaster with an A5 War Pig, and a '97 Gibson SG-I with a C-pig. Those two guitars together make a reasonably homogenous pair, soundwise, and I'd like to stick with that sound.

However, a Les Paul will of course sound radically different if I chuck the same pickup, ie. a Warpig in it, so I'll need something different. What would you lot suggest?

I'm a bit lost about myself, to be honest. I was thinking Cold Sweat, but I'm not sure. Bear in mind, I'm not going for that tight, percussive thing at all, so I think stuff like the Aftermath might not be ideal.

Other than that, the rig is a two-amp setup, with a Randall RH100G2 halfstack on one side and a Peavey 6505 + Marshall cab on the other. As for cleans, nevermind that..

Perhaps a C-Bomb.

Myeah, maybe. Thing is just, that I didn't like the Nailbomb that much when I tried it some time ago. I'd be willing to give one another try first, but I'm not so sure to be honest.

Fair play though; the one I tried was in an SG, so of course that does make a difference.

Perhaps a C-Bomb.

That's what I was thinking as well but since I am not really into the heavier metal styles I did not feel that I could really add something valuable.

Cheers Stephan

Man up

...says the skinny bloke with the glasses!

(I'm wearing glasses too at the moment though, so boo me I guess )

I had been thinking about The Mules, but wouldn't it be a bit of a problem going from Pigs to Mules*, in terms of amp settings and volume and such?

*What is this, a bloody petting zoo?

Hahaha, touché

I think you would be surprised... in terms of outright volume the Mules aren't far behind the Warpigs or any of the rest of the range really. The thing that you will notice is how quickly that tails away though - the Mules are much much less compressed, and therefore have a much more natural decay. With a good, resonant Les Paul that won't be an issue though, and you'll have a completely fresh sound at your disposal.
The Riff Raff would be a punchier and brighter alternative to consider too.

However, if you're not quite man enough ( ;) ), I'd recommend the Painkiller. It should give you a broadly similar level of output to your Warpigs, while the strong upper midrange focus will tie things in with your existing guitar's (presumably) midrangey tones.

Well, put like that Mules sound like a fine idea indeed! Of course, I'll hold off final judgement until I have found the guitar, and heard what the natural sound of it is. If I end with one that's quite bright and spanky, I may just go for the old standby and put the pig in it. I'm going to a Vintage guitar expo at the start of October, so it'll be interesting to see what I come home with, if anything at all.

Otherwise, a mate of mine is selling a '90 LP Classic Goldtop for a very reasonable price, so that's an option too. The one I'm gassing the most now though, is a wonderfully battered and bruised '77 Pro Deluxe I've seen on the web. I'm really hoping I can gather up the cash for that one! It's black and it looks like it's been to Hell and oh $%&#ing hell I want it, preferably yesterday.

That said, maybe Humbucker sized Pig 90's would do the trick?

Nothing useful to suggest, I just want to support the skinny blokes with glasses.

I did too, but I don't think he really needs it. He's like Bruce Lee, skinny but fast!  :)
