I've just booked a workshop with the chap on the left.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH0JhZeBuIw
He's worked with some of the best guitarists in the world and I'm more than a little intimidated but I've improved more in the last week than at any other point in my life due to the frantic "Do not embarrass yourself in front of Lollo Mier" practice sessions. So it's already paying off.
Have any of you ever had to play in front of musicians that are way out of you're league?
-
Bill Steer watched our show when we opened for his band Firebird.
Dave Meniketti heard part of our soundcheck when we opened for Y&T.
Those were the most intimidating I can think of off the top of my head.
-
Aphex Twin, DJ Sy
i'll have a think if there were any more
-
Fellow forum members at BKP meets. And that was only for nanoseconds. :P

Well, can't say I've ever felt intimidated :D
But I have supported or been on the same bill with the following:
Beverly Martyn
The Alarm
Roy Harper
Squeeze
Mick Clarke (I think that was his name)
I do doubt Squeeze actually saw us play... And I think Mr Harper was stoned in my dressing room (one of the few gigs where I actually had a dressing room - but when I found it I discovered that he and his small entourage were using it for smoking purposes, and would I mind using theirs instead). Mrs Martyn was extremely drunk when I supported her (she'd been brilliant a few weeks earlier supporting Loudon Wainwright III). She was very friendly before the gig. Then she disappeared off somewhere and I did my first set. Then I settled down to watch hers, and was amazed to see her kill the audience... She then settled down to watch my second set... it took quite a bit to revive the audience... She seemed a bit non-plussed that they were actually capable of making a noise... Unfortunately, they died rather quickly when she wandered back on again. She didn't seem too happy with them then... and she didn't talk to me afterwards...
Assuming I've got his name right, this Mick Clarke bloke is the best musician I've ever seen on the same bill with me. He was a seasoned pub blues-rock rock musician by then, utterly superb player. We saw his sound-check before we started, so we knew we were definitely the "support" act, but I didn't feel any intimidation. He even said "good set lads, nice one" as we were clearing our kit off the stage. I've also had various other London pub-rock dudes in audiences - the most famous of these would be Micky Moody (and possibly Tony McPhee and Dumpy but I might be confusing various gigs where I was playing or just there as a punter).
EDIT: Philly's posted while I was typing... obviously, all of us who've played at BKP meets in front of him should have felt some small measure of nervousness, if not actual intimidation (since it's rumoured that he was the guy who used to play the solos behind the PA at MSG gigs in the 80s  )
-
Alan Barnes and Trevor Tomkins
-
did a gig with paul daniels in the 80's, alright he's not a musician.. but he's magic :?
-
I've been blessed to play in bands with some really unbelievable players in wedding and function bands, who've been by far the most intimidating. Played in front of a lot of bands I'm a huge fan of, but none of them have ever been intimidating, presumably simply because i was older by then.
-
At the BKP meet I wisely sat and played with stomp boxes. I know my place and it ain't sat behind a guitar in that company ;)
-
Accidentally wound up playing with one of the guitarists from Cough at a party, once.
I was shroomed and jamming to some Acid King in a friend's jam room when the guy walked in and played along. A few hours later, I was told who he was and about lost my mind.
-
Hmm,I did play in front of one of the most famous musicians on the planet but fortunately I was playing bass in a band where I wasn't the prominent one.Another advantage was that the guitarist in that band was Mike Casswell so I could hide behind his playing.

Sh!t. I've been rumbled. :x

With respect Mr Juan. That's rubbish. I'm pretty sure I was playing and I have no musical ability.
The best musician I have played in front of would be Dave Kilminster.
He was a mate of a mate back in the 90s.
Otherwise, it's that random tw@t that always appears out of nowhere to play in the slot before me on open mic nights and just happens to be amazing

Yes indeed - even you put me to shame Philly!
-
I've played in front of "Guitar George" Borowski from Sultans of Swing fame
-
I have taken lessons from:
Dennis Sandoli
Joe Scro
Joe Frederico
Paul Gilbert
Mike Campese
Master classes with:
Tal Farlow
Pat Martino
Arlen Roth
Jimmy Vivino
Sharon Isben
Carlos Alomar
Steve Vai
Opened for:
Lynch Mob (2x)
Symphony X (3x)
Angra
Nightwish
Jammed with:
Greg Howe
George Lynch
... yeah, outclassed at every turn!!!
-
The best guitarists I've been lucky enough to play with are Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe and Alex Hutchings. In all three cases their consummate musicianship is such that once you get over the initial wobbles they really encourage the best out of you. Those experiences are truly some of the most inspiring of my life, I can only hope I get the opportunity to do so again someday!

I was about to say the same BKP meet..where martin roped me into being his metal player (with a firm stare in my direction and "I need a metal player!") and judiciously avoided doing anything I could have $%ed up
Other than that...my mate Barney...hes pretty good. No celebrity stories, alas :( Would love to though.
-
Nicky Blackmarket
The Orb opened for me once (!) turns out they love Black Sabbath
Also played in front of A Guy Called Gerald
edit 1: I rapped in front of Witchfynde (somewhat bizarre that one)
i'm sure more will come to me. all these guys (expect possibly Aphex Twin) were really sound
edit 2: Not really a musician, but Malcolm McLaren (who I thought was rather pompous)
edit 3: I read an interview with Richard Kruspe (from Rammstein) when he played in front of Iommi and Page - said he was sh!tting himself - I would be too :)
Its generally quite an honour to meet these people though, especially when they like/tolerate what your doing ;)
-
Some Turkish dude. Very sweet, but later I was told that he grew up in eastern Turkey and learned about western music from listening to the radio, mixing that with the traditional Turkish music around him.
The sad result was that he did not know that many of the things he did (weird microtonal polyphonic things, played very fase on a fretless SG for instance) were impossible and that therefore he needed to stop doing that.
-
I've played in front of "Guitar George" Borowski from Sultans of Swing fame
did he know all the chords?
-
I had Paul Raymond from UFO and MSG fame in the workshop on Saturday
Whilst I obviously have always had Mr Schenker on somewhat of a pedestal I have to confess that Paul's all round musicianship is a big key in my eyes to what made UFO so great, playing both guitar and keyboards
Even though he is left handed he plays his guitars strung up for a right handed player.
Great guy and now a BKP user as well

Which models has he got?
-
Just put an MQ in the neck of the Vintage guitar he is endorsing
And sold him an irish tour for the bridge of a strat
-
I played a show with Fell Silent a number of years ago. That was it really.
-

Ah yes, I saw he's endorsing Vintage - must admit, at first I didn't recognise him in the advert!
Good to know he actually uses the guitar and likes it enough to upgrade the pickups! :)
-
Bit tangential but...
The wife of a old colleague was a winner of BBC Young Musician of the Year - to watch her play the piano close up was unreal - the speed and dexterity of movement was something else.

I've just been reading back through this thread and found I missed this first time:

You mean... gasp... Lady Gaga? :o
Who though? It wasn't a left-handed singer-songwriter/bass-player was it? (I'd love to have played in front of him...)
-

Roo would like to meet him too....

Roo would like to meet him too....
 I thought that too... in fact, I nearly posted "It wasn't one of Roo's bete noires was it?", but I wasn't too sure of the spelling and it only narrowed it down to three suspects (Sir Cliff, Sir Paul, or a traffic warden)
-
My very first band once warmed up for danish funk act Ridin' Thumb (http://ridinthumb.dk/). The show was recorded live by Danish national radio and they aired one of our songs later in the evening.
Pretty crazy as we only possesed a few milligrams of talent.

Well, we played last november after these three babes. Not easy to blow them away

so who?

Notice he didn't say that it wasn't Lady Gaga
After Macca, my money's on Eric now... (unless of course it was something like a gig at Graceland and you could see the grave from the stage )

That's very very unfair on Sir Cliff. He might be an utter tool, but at least you can laugh at him. For the others, I have only unbridled contempt.
-
Thinking about it, I am not sure he was the best musician I have played in front of and I suppose it is debatable about whether he was a musician in the sense that he is known for his skills with a musical instrument.
But I suppose I'd better say who it was: Michael Jackson but like I said before, I was a humble bass player and Mike Casswell was in the band too so I doubt whether anyone noticed me.

I heard he liked to "fiddle" :?

I must admit, I couldn't remember the (extremely heterosexual) Sir Cliff being on your hate list....
But I suppose I'd better say who it was: Michael Jackson but like I said before, I was a humble bass player and Mike Casswell was in the band too so I doubt whether anyone noticed me.
Still, playing in front of MJ (love him or loathe him) is quite something, IMO.
-
Oh wow! I nearly said Michael Jackson earlier, partly in jest, partly in... oh alright... jest... (he was the most famous musician I could think of, but I couldn't imagine how you'd be playing in front of him).
But yeah, he definitely counted as a musician in my books. Not one of my favourites, but pretty bluddy famous all the same (not even counting the later "infamous" non-musical stuff) - yep, quite something to have played in front of him :D

Chap I know is engaged to an ex-winner. They're both cellists. He's good, a Royal Academy student of the year I think, but she's outrageous.
